cherry venture: stephen phibbs
Contemporary painter Stephen Phibbs pays tribute to the once iconic and now dismantled shipwreck Cherry Venture, which ran aground on Teewah Beach in southeast Queensland in 1973. Presenting an extended survey of paintings of the wreck from various perspectives, the exhibition explores the artist’s experimental and creative journey as he documents the changing wreck that has fascinated him for many years.

dreaming or reality?

An exhibition of digital prints depicting improbable situations with highly realistic imagery. Josef Lanc’s digitally crafted images are a response to world events, dreams, fairytales told by his grandmother and ‘backyard’ experiences, often inspired by the great Surrealists; Magritte, Tanguy and Dali, and then further manipulated through a combination of digital software programs and cutting edge 3D technology.

To celebrate Heritage Week, the Caloundra Library will host a free talk by local author Lance Paterson (Wreck-ollections: Ships and Shipwrecks in Queensland Waters, volumes 1 and 2). Following will be a guided tour of the exhibition Painting Survey of the Shipwreck Cherry Venture at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

Zhongjian: Midway
25 May–3 July 2011
Zhongjian: Midway, curated by Jin Sha, is a timely exhibition that reveals the mesh of associations and influences that operate in our transcultural world. This exhibition consists of works by fourteen contemporary artists from China and Australia, and features painting, sculpture, installation and video projections. Five of the artists are Chinese nationals living and working in China, four are Chineseborn artists living and working in. Australia, and five identify themselves as Australian artists whose work has been closely informed by Chinese culture.

cultivate – exciting new arts magazine out now
Cultivate is an exciting new magazine from the Creative and Learning Communities branches of Sunshine Coast Council. Not only a guide, it also explores the initiatives and partnerships that nurture, promote and enrich the culture of the Sunshine Coast. Cultivate
encourages you to take time to understand and enjoy the things you can do and experience at our galleries, libraries, venues, museums and open air events. The free magazine will be produced twice a year and will be available from libraries, galleries, council venues, visitor information centres and council chambers.
