Criminalised too young: why have so many people in prison spent time in care as children?

While care leavers are not inevitably more likely to commit offences, there has been a persistent tendency to blame individuals for their over-representation in the justice system. Explanations often refer to the extremely “complex needs” of the “damaged” children who go into care, as well as the “serious failings” of their families. But such language simply perpetuates the stigma attached to being in care and serves to divert attention away from the serious failings in some parts of our care and criminal justice systems.”

Culture24: Let's Get Real | How do we digitally engage young audiences?

If arts and heritage organisations are to connect with children and young people as a core audience group it is imperative that our digital content and the way we use digital tools and channels are relevant to their needs.

"We are looking to work collaboratively with cohorts of arts and heritage organisations to help them better reach and engage children and young people online. If you are interested in better understanding strategic and practical ways to digitally engage children and young people, Culture24′s Let’s Get Real Young Audiences programme of work could be for you."

Cogapp's Pat Hadley reflects on last month's Museum Ideas conference

“Museums are time machines. Not just in the simplistic sense of being capsules containing objects from the past, but as organisations. They have often been captained or crewed by a staff who are more concerned with safely transporting the fantastic objects from a hallowed past into an abstract future and worryingly unconcerned about relating to the present population around them.

Fortunately, in the last two decades the sector has become much more connected with current audiences and for me, one of the strongest themes at the Museum Ideas conference (6 October 2016) was about an intense awareness of museum’s roles in the past, present, and future.”

Former director of children's services speaks of the glimmer of hope in new autism research

"Amidst all the gloom on mental health, there is some really good news about autism, with newly-reported research on an intervention - not a treatment - that has the considerable virtues of being reasonably cheap, effective, and a great example of early intervention. And since it also plays into one of my obsessions, parent education, I'm especially excited."

Generation ART: Young Artists on Tour | Wednesday 16th November | 10am - 4.45pm | De Monfort University, Leicester

Off the Map: Young People / Artists / Learning

Talks, discussions and provocations

Venue: The Gallery Vijay Patel Building, De Montfort University, Leicester LE1 9BH

Art, craft and design as a subject is under increasing pressure in England. Austerity measures are impacting on the resources schools can offer to support the visual arts on the curriculum and related creative activities. Government education policies are focusing increasingly on maths, English and STEM subjects, with the mistaken assumption that art and design cannot contribute to these. Visits to galleries are diminishing, as are opportunities for children and young people to work directly with professional artists, makers and designers.

The truth about boys and books

Keith Topping, professor of educational and social research at the University of Dundee, is behind two academic research papers: one using data from 852,295 students in 3,243 schools (a tenth of the 8.4 million children in the UK), and another examining the quiz answers relating to the comprehension of books read by 150,220 children in 967 schools. Between them, they reach a damning conclusion on boys between five and 18 years old: “What they are doing is not particularly good – and they are lagging behind.”
