Allergy Season

Achoo! April showers have fallen and May flowers have bloomed—allergy season is in full swing.
Allergies are an exaggerated immune response or reaction to substances in the environment, i.e., inhalants or foods. Symptoms can vary, but they usually include: coughing, itchy eyes, burning eyes, nasal congestion, watery nose, sneezing, sore and dry throat.
Allergies are very prevalent in the United States. An estimated 50 million people suffer from this chronic disease, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. This year may be especially bad for those suffering with allergies.
You may have your parents to thank for your burning eyes or constant sneezing when dust gets the best of you. Studies show a link between allergies and genetics.
Although there is no cure for allergies, treatments and medications can alleviate the symptoms. Allergy shots, for example, help by producing antibodies in the body to prevent the exaggerated immune response.
