Penemuan ‘Hobbit Flores’, spesies manusia baru di Flores yang memiliki tubuh kerdil yang dinamai Homo floresiensis, pada 2004 sempat diragukan oleh beberapa peneliti. Manusia kerdil yang hidup puluhan ribu tahun lalu dan sudah punah itu dianggap Homo sapiens yang memiliki tubuh kecil. Namun, ditemukannya fosil manusia kerdil lain pada 2014 di Flores memperkuat temuan adanya spesies manusia kerdil tersebut.

José Alexandre Felizola Diniz-Filho, ahli Ekologi dan Evolusi dari Universidade Federal de Goias, dan Pasquale Raia, ahli paleontologi dan paleocology dari University of Naples Federico II, menjelaskan proses evolusi cepat yang memungkinkan munculnya manusia kerdil di tanah Flores puluhan ribu tahun yang lalu.
