Student Affairs and Enrollment welcomes Smith Marisa Ryan Smith has been hired as the next administrative manager in Student Affairs and Enrollment. In this role she will manage administrative, personnel and fiscal functions for the unit, supervise the Cougar Center, act as liaison with various campus departments and serve as the principal advisor to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Domanic Thomas. Smith previously worked in Finance and Operations, and brings a wealth of experience in budget planning, WSU finance policy and personnel management. Smith said she will miss daily interaction with her Finance and Operations team, but she is looking forward to furthering her career with WSU Vancouver and to working in a department that is so student centered. Smith is also a proud WSU alumna. Purchase a WSU Vancouver T-shirt to support students in need College Hill Custom Threads is supporting WSU by creating a branded T-shirt for all six campuses and donating proceeds from sales to the Student Emergency Funds at each. The business owner, a WSU alumnus, opened a pop-up shop online that sells the shirts for $20 each. The deadline to order is 10 a.m. Friday, May 22. Orders will be shipped. Governor Cyrus Habib is sponsoring the Washington Mask Challenge to produce and supply cloth face masks for members of our state. Director of Human Resources Julia Getchell is leading an all-volunteer effort to produce cloth face masks for members of the WSU Vancouver campus community and Washingtonians. If you don’t use your FY20 personal holiday, it will be lost and you will get a new one for FY21. Water main extension to be completed this summer/fall Within the next few weeks, Clark Public Utilities will begin design for an upcoming water main extension project that will cross the northwest corner of campus (NE 158th Street and NE 33rd Avenue). The engineering and surveying crews may use drones in their work. During the design phase, normal water service will be maintained and every effort will be made to accommodate local traffic. Construction is anticipated for summer/fall. Mark your calendar to purchase parking permits online Be prepared to purchase your parking permits online beginning July 27. This year, no permits will be sold in the Parking Services Office. If you plan on selecting the payroll deduction option, you must purchase your permit by Aug. 25—no payroll deduction requests will be accepted after that date. Parking Services will no longer hold Orange permits for faculty and staff. Plan ahead—last year Orange permits sold out in 10 days. Smith Teaching and Learning Grant from the vice provost for academic engagement and student achievement in the amount of $5,000 for their proposal entitled “Faculty Professionalization for Comprehensive Implementation of Community Engaged Pedagogies.” The Samuel H. and Patricia W. Smith Teaching and Learning Grant was established by alumni and friends when WSU President Smith retired in 2000. Grants for teaching and learning innovations align with his passion for creating new ways to educate students. Gretchen Rollwagen-Bollens, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences; Steve Bollens, professor and director of multi-campus planning and strategic initiatives for the College of Arts and Sciences; and colleagues at the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received notice that their proposal has been accepted for funding by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs for $147,000 ($35,000 to WSU). Rollwagen-Bollens will lead the group in designing, implementing and assessing the impacts of a series of multi-day workshops for Pacific Northwest tribal members focused on the biology, ecology and management of aquatic invasive species found (or have likelihood of establishing) on tribal lands.
