Copyright on Campus: Highlighting Some Recent Changes

As the new school year begins, faculty and students may find it useful to note three significant shifts in our copyright environment that occurred over the summer.

The first is that the University is once again covered by an Access Copyright license. For basic information see the Copyright website page on Changes in Our Copying Environment and the Access Copyright poster.

The Copyright Permissions Flow Chart outlines the breadth of permissions sources and circumstances that may be applicable to the copying you wish to do. Additional information about the copyright process can be found here.

IT Alert -- Java Security Risk

A recent defect in Java version 7 is being actively exploited across the internet. Java is a piece of software on your computer that runs certain applications and webpages, giving them more functionality.

Java is generally installed on all Windows and Mac machines at some point in their life. This particular issue would allow an attacker to run unauthorized software on your computer without your knowledge or consent and would result in malware, viruses, or other suspicious programs being installed on your computer.

A fix is now available and all users are encouraged to update their software as soon as possible. Learn how, here.

Survey Process Reminder

The number-crunching experts in Institutional Analysis are reminding the U of L community that if you wish to conduct a survey or distribute survey information to students or employees, they can help define how best to do that, and also ensure that the survey process follows the policy and guidelines approved by the Board of Governors on December 16, 2010.

The policy was developed to avoid 'over-surveying' people and also to ensure that no FOIP or improper data collection issues take place. Get more details here.

Fun with FOIP -- What's a PIB?

If you guessed a fancy version of PB&J, please try again.

The correct answer? PIB stands for Personal Information Bank.

PIBs are an important aspect of FOIP legislation because they identify what personal information we are collecting, why we are collecting it, and how it is being used.

Despite this importance, many people are confused about what PIBs actually are, and have no idea if they even have any.  Well wonder no more! Here is a diagram to help explain it.

FOIP legislation requires public bodies (University of Lethbridge) to create and publish a directory of its PIBs. This is our Directory.

If your unit or department has a PIB, or several, please complete this form and send it to me via campus mail to the Privacy Office, or through email (karen.mahar@uleth.ca).

If you have already submitted your PIBs to the Privacy Office in the past, please ensure it is in the Directory and that is up to date and correct. If any changes are needed, please forward those to me as well.

If you need any help or clarification, please feel free to contact me (karen.mahar@uleth.ca or 4620). I’d be happy to assist.

Stay tuned for even more fun with FOIP in the future!

Word on the Street Festival -- Volunteers Needed

Inline Image

The 2012 Word on the Street Festival takes place on Sunday, September 23 downtown on the streets and parking lot surrounding the Lethbridge Public Library Main Branch, located on the corner of Stafford Drive and 5th Ave. S.

A very successful launch last year saw more than 2,000 people take in a full day of music, readings, family activities and fun for all ages.

The U of L is supporting this festival again -- the Bookstore is a partner and will be on site, several student clubs and individual students have agreed to take on specific projects, and numerous faculty and staff volunteer their time.

This year's event promises to be bigger and better, and is still Alberta's only Word on the Street festival!

You can help with this event by volunteering for a variety of projects. Learn more here.
