With changes in monitor sizes, ongoing changes on Google (ranking algorithm, Google Places listings, Google +), mobile browsing (tablets, iPhones) and design trends, these days you're lucky if your website stays current for more than 2 years.
Just like your house, your website needs constant improvements (unless you like paisley wallpaper and shag carpet), and, if you haven't been making improvements to your site on a regular basis, there's a good chance your website is NOT making the grade. Is your site getting good rankings on search engines? Do you squint to see it because it's so smal? Is your content current and relevant? If you can't answer these questions, it may be time to reevaluate your website.
Let's look back five years. The standard website size was 650 pixels. Today's standard is 960 pixels because most people now have larger monitors. Does your site seem "teeny weeny"? If so, it's yet another reason to redesign a new site. Unfortunately there's no way to make little sites bigger. (I was going to refer to Viagra here, but was told I wasn't allowed). Guess I did anyways. ;)
Last year, iPhone sales in Canada surpassed Blackberry sales (2.85 million iPhones were sold into Canada compared to 2.08 million Blackberries). If you have a website that uses Flash, iPhones and iPads won't display your site correctly, if at all. So with mobile browsing expected to exceed ten percent this year, if your website includes Flash, then many visitors won't see all or parts of your site and it's definitely time for an update.
