Quality Counts.

So many things compete for our attention today.  Buy this. Do that. Go there. Listen Up.

How can we separate the message-worthy chat from the empty chatter?  Start by looking at the source.  Quality source, quality message.  Today, we've got two great examples to share:

A Meaningful First: for BCI Courtside Live

On September 24, three pro basketball players - with lots to say - got real with Clark Kellogg in front of a live internet audience at the first BCI Courtside Live event.  1000 people tuned in!  With questions from audience members and answers from the pros, all in real time, BCI Courtside Live cut through the bubble of professional basketball to give us new insight into a player's heart and mind.  "What a blessing to be part of such an opportunity and outreach," said Kellogg.  "Anthony [Tolliver], Maurice [Evans], and Mike [Wilks] were powerful in their authenticity, candor, and humility."

Anthony Tolliver (NBA, Charlotte Bobcats) told BCI:  "Thanks for the opportunity to share my story through BCI Courtside Live.  [I was able to get] 'up close and personal' with fans and kids."

There will be three more BCI Courtside Live events during this basketball season.  The next event is scheduled for February 11, the week of the NBA All-Star Weekend.  Keep up-to-date on BCI Courtside Live news at www.bciedge.org/courtsidelive.

A Meaningful Introduction: BCI Loop's New Chaplain

"Because of the visibility that players have, [BCI] will give future generations role models to look up to that are a positive influence and have spiritual and natural wealth."

Rev. Columbus T. Smith Jr.
BCI Loop Fraternity Facilitator & Chaplain,
Team Chaplain for the Minnesota Timberwolves

When Columbus T. Smith Jr. works with a group of professional basketball players, he's keenly aware of just how hard it can be to keep the attention of any active, distracted-but-seeking young man.  But as a chaplain for the Minnesota Timberwolves for 13 seasons, a volunteer chapel service provider at the Hennepin County Adult Corrections Facility for 25 years, and a volunteer tutor and mentor to "at risk" students, Smith enjoys the unique and varied challenges of his calling.

He now adds another role, as the Fraternity Facilitator and Chaplain for BCI Loop - the fraternity for and driven by pro basketball players.

Working with athletes fits into Smith's interest in working with young men, especially African American.  He began as Chaplain with Minnesota's NBA team.....[read more]

As president of BCI, I have conversations with coaches, players, chaplains and others in the industry, along with business leaders, donors, fans, kids, and more on a regular basis.  And as I lead this organization to the next level of its "sphere of influence," I see groundbreaking, all-access, conversational events like BCI Courtside Live as part of our unique value.  It's just one way we're breaking through the chatter and truly adding to a global conversation.  After all....

A message is only as good as its source.

In this eBlast, we've celebrated the thoughts of four outstanding and influential men.  As an organization and as individuals who work to give BCI a strong community voice, we all have a lot to say.  We know you do, too.  So, as always, we invite you to add your voice to ours.  Tune in (and participate in!) the next BCI Courtside Live event.  Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter.  Tell us what you think.  Like you, we're always listening for the best stuff.

Looking Up,

Kathy
