Aiden’s poster detailed the work he did over the summer comparing the environmental impact and cost of surgical supplies in laparoscopic versus robotic elective cholecystectomies under the direction of Jon Gould, MD, MBA, and SHE Center director, Christa Wagner, PhD. MCW Staff Host “Captain Planet” Sustainability Session at ADRP International Conference Colin Daly and Bethany Olson at their ADRP session. MCW Director of Stewardship Colin Daly and MCW Stewardship Program Coordinator Bethany Olson hosted a ”Captain Planet” session at the 22nd annual Association of Donor Relations Professionals International Conference (ADRP) which took place from September 15th -18th in Indianapolis, IN. The session focused on how to be more sustainable in donor stewardship, acknowledgement, recognition, and engagement using tips from experts. Participants were engaged throughout the discussion and had the opportunity to collaborate and develop plans that could be brought back to their respective organizations. Thank you, Colin and Bethany, for another great reminder that we can approach all fields with a sustainability lens! Earth Day Seedling Update and Photos On April 22, the SHE Center hosted a hybrid event in recognition of Earth Day which included a recycling drive and distribution of 300 seedlings to MCW faculty, staff, and students who attended in person. Red Oak, White Spruce, and American Hazelnut seedlings were provided by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources – check out their growth in the yards of our MCW community members! The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change: 2024 Launch Almost 10 years after the release of its initial Health and Climate Change report, on October 30, The Lancet released an updated report titled The 2024 report of The Lancet Countdown on health and climate change: facing record-breaking threats from delayed action. The report details the wide-reaching impacts of the climate crisis on all facets of human health, the consequences of continued inaction, and a call for real progress. Alongside the report itself, The Lancet created a website to explore the data and related graphics, as well as a visual summary report. Explore Your Neighborhood Walkability with Close City Do you think that your neighborhood is walkable? Do you think that it is not? Driving less and walking more helps to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with climate change while supporting health through increased physical activity. Try out this interactive online tool called Close City to see a map of how long it takes to get to supermarkets, parks, and more using alternate methods of transportation like walking and biking in different parts of the city.
