Stephen Cleary Lecture Series: Aristotle and Screenwriting Now
Tuesdays 1, 8, 15 May

For the third year in a row, celebrated English film development consultant Stephen Cleary returns to the VCA for his popular screenwriting lecture series. Over three Tuesdays in May, Mr Cleary will take three basic concepts first described by Aristotle (Catharsis, Ethos and Mythos) and discuss their use (and abuse) in contemporary screenwriting, showing how they contain vital and fresh ideas for any screenwriter working today.

Article 1
24 - 28 April

Theatre maker, director and choreographer Bagryana Popov is working with third year Theatre students (Acting Company 2012) and third year Production students to devise a new work inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone, entitled Article 1. Over the last decade, Bagryana has worked prolifically on theatre and dance projects, investigating connections between performance and political structures, and has recently completed her PhD at the VCA.

Performance Ensembles at Bennetts Lane
17 & 23 April; 14 & 15 May

Over the next four weeks, the Contemporary Music Performance stream presents four concerts at Melbourne’s top jazz club, Bennetts Lane. The April gigs will feature original student works and arrangements - special guest, jazz pianist and composer Joe Chindamo will perform on the 23rd. The May gigs will showcase large ensembles - both instrumental and vocal - featuring a range of styles including Afro-American percussion, Latin, Indigenous, traditional and contemporary Big Band.

Miegunyah Public Lecture: Dr Susan O’Neill
Friday 27 April, 6.00pm

Drawing on recent studies by the Research for Youth, Music and Education project that involved young people from across Canada, Dr Susan O’Neill will give a public lecture exploring the characteristics of artistic and musical engagement and what young people value most about their involvement in the arts and music. Dr O’Neill is the 2012 Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellow.

Kroumata Percussion Ensemble

Sweden’s renowned Kroumata percussion ensemble will be in residence at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music this month, coaching students and staff in the intricacies of ensemble playing and demonstrating new repertoire, ideas and percussive techniques. On Saturday 21 April, Kroumata will be joined by percussion students for a performance in Melba Hall featuring some of the greatest names in percussion repertoire, including works by Xenakis, Ligeti and Steve Reich.

APRA Art Music Awards 2012

Congratulations to our winning alumni at the APRA Art Music Awards. Jazz pianist and composer Andrea Keller (BMusPerf(Hons), 2001) won Jazz Work of the Year for Affectations. Composer Peter Sculthorpe (BMus, 1951; DMus, 1989) was honoured with the Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music. The State Award for Excellence by an Organisation or an Individual went to Speak Percussion, led by artistic director Eugene Ughetti (BMusPerf(Hons), 2002).
