Papanui-Innes community update - 5 November 2020

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
The Council are preparing our city's Long Term Plan 2021-31, which sets out what we want achieve over the next decade, and how it will be funded. It's a good time to start talking about the direction and priorities for our city over the next ten years, as we plan for our changing climate and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Consultation on our LTP 2021-31 will open in March 2021 and our Community Board will be preparing our submission, reinforcing what's important to our community. If you have any questions about the LTP process, including how to do a submission, our Community Board are here to support you. I encourage you all to check out the new web portal (below), be part of the conversation and help shape the future of our city. Keep being  kind and look after one another. Kia kaha.

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Wednesday 4 November. Some highlights of our meeting including hearing from local youth who recently received community board funding for their projects as part of our Public Forum. We also approved plans for safety improvements for the two zebra crossings on Innes Road, which are used as Kea crossings by Marihau Primary School and St Francis of Assisi School. You can check out the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes  Community Board Facebook page for more information, read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

Let's work it out together

From today, we’re encouraging everyone to find out more about our Long Term Plan 2021-31 so they can make informed feedback when public consultation begins in March next year.

Our Long Term Plan 2021–31 sets out what we plan to achieve over the next decade, and how it will be funded. COVID-19 and climate change are game changers. We need to have the right game plan in place and our changing world means our game plan needs to change too.

Our What’s the right game plan? early engagement campaign will run for the next month – and is a chance for everyone to find out more about the Long Term Plan process and some of the key challenges and opportunities we’re facing as we develop our 10-year budget.

Please share the word about our campaign so as many people as possible can get game ready: newsline.ccc.govt.nz/long-term-plan/

We have savings to make

Like many of our ratepayers, Christchurch City Council has been hit hard financially by the COVID-19 pandemic and we’re facing very challenging times ahead. We need to support our city as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic after a decade of rebuilding from the earthquakes. We must also prepare for the impact of climate change while continuing to provide the core services we know are important to our city’s residents. We’re looking at all avenues available to help us make these savings in our Long Term Plan.

We need more action on climate change

Christchurch is already experiencing the effects of climate change. Our world is warming up and sea levels are rising. As a city we need to reduce our carbon emissions and do what we can to mitigate the effects of climate change. We also need to prepare for the changes that are ahead of us. Our Long Term Plan is an opportunity to think about how we address these issues over the next ten years.
