Highlight: AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships


The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is pleased to announce a call for applications for the 2017-18  Science & Technology Policy Fellowships (STPF). STPF provides scientists, social scientists, engineers, and health/medical professionals a unique opportunity to contribute to federal policymaking in Washington DC . Policy fellows gain hands-on policy experience, help develop and execute solutions to address societal challenges, and become a member of a strong and influential network of 3,000+ fellows. Application deadline is November 1, 2016.

Responsible Conduct of Research Training
The Fall 2016 RCR session will begin on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 and will run for 7 weeks on Tuesdays from 4-6 PM.  First year PhD students in BioMed are required to take this training and your registration is automatic. For all others, please register your intent to enroll by sending an e-mail to Tracey Cronin no later than September 5.

RCR Refresher Training
OGPS offers refresher training for postdoctoral researchers and fourth-year predoctoral students in the Division of Biology and Medicine that satisfies the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) requirements for the Responsible Conduct of Research. EMBO Laboratory Management Course for Postdocs
Leadership and management skills are critical for a successful career in science. EMBO, in partnership with consultancy teams, has designed this course specifically to meet the needs of researchers. This course introduces key, yet simple, leadership concepts and gives you the chance to identify the different roles that you have to take, see where your strengths and resources lie, and identify strategies for coping with roles in which you are uncomfortable.

Organotypic and Next Generation Culture Methods
This course uses both seminar and hands-on sessions to explore the emerging use of cells cultured ex vivo as models for biological systems, with a primary focus on 3D, organoid culture. The course is designed for researchers with some cell culture experience, who wish to utilize 3D or conditionally reprogrammed culture methods in their research. The application deadline is September 9, 2016.

Movies on the Rocks: 'Dirty Dancing'
Friends of Ballard Park will screen Dirty Dancing during its 11th Annual MOVIES ON THE ROCKS series. Movies begin at dusk in the quarry meadow, which will be open at 6:30 PM for blankets and picnicking. Seating is on the grass--bring a blanket or lawn chair. Wednesday, August 17, 8-10 PM at Ballard Park, Newport, RI.

Free Pops Concert at Roger Williams Park
Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy inspiring favorites like the 1812 Overture, Fanfare for the Common Man, Stars and Stripes Forever, and Star Wars, played by the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert is free, open to the public, and will feature food trucks on site. Thursday, August 18, 7-9 PM at the Temple to Music, Roger Williams Park, Providence (Rain date: August 19).
