MacLean participates in report aimed at improving U.S. military leadership and performance
Alair MacLean, associate professor of sociology, participated in a newly released report, “The Context of Military Environments: An Agenda for Basic Research of Social and Organizational Factors Relevant to Small Units.” Alair served on the committee that prepared the report, which recommends a research program to inform U.S. military personnel policies and practices, and improve leadership and performance. Published by the National Academies Press, the report is
available online.
Alair’s research focuses on social inequality, including how wars affect veterans’ work and health. She is the co-author of an article published earlier this year in the journal Social Problems, titled “Coming Home: Attitudes of U.S. Veterans Returning from Iraq.”
Celebrate diversity at Connections on Wednesday

Join the celebration as WSU Vancouver demonstrates its commitment to diversity at Connections. The free event includes food, music, prizes and a WSU Vancouver original photo exhibit.
The “Faces of WSUV” is a walk-through photo exhibit that showcases 12 students, faculty and staff through photos and stories. The exhibit highlights the diverse backgrounds that make up the campus community.
Learn about diversity-related student organizations, such as the Cougar Pride Club, Latino Student Association and Students with Disabilities Club. Sign up to volunteer for one of four non-profits in attendance, including the Cascade AIDS Project, YWCA, Southwest Washington College Access and Southwest Washington MESA.
Enjoy music by the Portland-based band Rhythm Culture. For 15 years Rhythm Culture has focused on developing its own signature sound driven by a reggae beat.

Learn about the Recreation Program’s trips and rental program at an open house. Staff and faculty can use this fabulous resource as well as students. Have you tried paddle boarding yet? Interested in joining a hike? There are good deals and good times to be had.
Stay for a 5 p.m. showing of “DamNation.” This film explores the sea change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our future is bound to the life and health of our rivers. Majestic cinematography and unexpected
discoveries move through rivers and landscapes altered by dams, but also through a metamorphosis in values.
New faces and spaces for veterans
Krista Griffin has joined WSU Vancouver as veteran coordinator. Krista will handle certifications for VA educational benefits and oversee all things related to veterans on campus. Krista’s office is in the Student Services Center, Room 113. Student Tiffany Plous is the 2014/15 student Vet Corps navigator. Tiffany will help student veterans navigate their higher education career both on campus and in the community. She is located in Classroom Building, Room 212.
In October a dedicated space for student veterans will open in Classroom Building, Room 214. An open house is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 7.
