Inside CSE - October Part 1CSE Presents:OCT 6, 3pm, SLTH2Professor Gregory A. Weiss Making Enzymes Dance and Sing Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, University of California Who could forget when CSE's Prof. Colin Raston and Professor Gregory Weiss (UCI) were able to "unboil" a hard-boiled egg by restoring the the lysozyme protein to its correct 3D folded structure using the Vortex Fluid Device? We are very pleased to have Professor Weiss here at Flinders to speak in more detail about his exciting research and interesting discoveries that can be made when we hear what proteins have to say. By electronically "listening" to their "singing" when proteins and viruses are wired to electronic circuits, the Weiss lab has been able to analyse in detail the inner-workings of several enzymes. Come along and meet Professor Weiss this Friday. On this day in ScienceIn 1997, American biology professor Stanley B. Prusiner won the Nobel Prize for medicine for discovering prions (proteinaceous infectious particles), a class of infectious self-reproducing pathogens primarily or solely composed of protein. Another three successful Flinders CSE projects will receive funding in 2018 as part of the government New Columbo Plan (NCP).The NCP aims to increase knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships and trips to the region. With three new projects all to be undertaken in Malaysia, students will investigate the history, culture, politics and science and technology capabilities of Malaysia, experience forensic research in another country as well as study science policy in Malaysia. Congratulations to Michael Brunger and Paul Kirkbride for their success in obtaining funding for the students. CSE has previously been successful in obtaining funding for students to study in Fiji, Singapore, Nepal China, Philippines, Maldives and Malaysia.
Well done and good luck to all of the Science and Engineering students who graduated last month and thank you to all of the CSE staff for another successful year of teaching and supporting our students. A huge "Pat" on the back for our award winning GeographerWe are thrilled to bring you the news that CSE's Strategic Professor, Professor Patrick Hesp is one of only two geographers in 2017 to be awarded the Distinguished New Zealand Geographer Award and Medal by the New Zealand Geographical Society. For further details visit the Flinders blog. Across the seaEmeritus Professor Matthias Tomczak will be the major invited speaker at the First International Conference on Oceanography for West Asia, to be held on 30-31 October in Tehran. Prof. Tomczak's main address will be a review of modern developments of water mass analysis during the last 35 years and its application in ecosystem management and climate change. He will also chair a two hour workshop "The Ocean and Climate Change".
