SPC Fall Members Meeting Presentations

Thanks to all the SPC members who joined us in Dallas last month for a wonderful Fall Members Meeting. We had some excellent presentations, particularly from the newly formed SPC Member Working Groups. SPC members may access all the presentations on our website. Thank you again to our generous meeting hosts: Dell, The Dow Chemical Company, NatureWorks LLC, PaperWorks, Spartech, and PepsiCo for hosting our opening reception at their Frito Lay headquarters.

Packaging Stewardship Video Challenge

The SPC has announced a new video challenge where member companies are invited to submit short videos highlighting their company's progress, innovation, and commitment to sustainable packaging. The videos are intended to inspire and educate viewers. We believe this will be a great way for members to learn about the activities of other member companies, as well as a way to highlight the good work of our members and our collective impact as a coalition. SPC staff will choose the top videos to premiere at the SPC Spring Meeting 2012. Following the meeting, we will display all the videos on the SPC website. The theme of the challenge is: How is your company making the SPC definition come to life? Please refer to the Packaging Stewardship Video Challenge page on our website, where you'll find information on video guidelines and submission information. We hope you'll take us up on the challenge and that we can showcase your company's story next spring in Toronto!

SPC-GreenBlue Joint Committee

Given the SPC's continued growth in recent years, this spring the SPC Executive Committee and GreenBlue Board of Directors formed a Joint Committee, with three representatives from each, to discuss how to plan for a future of continued success. To better strengthen the coordination between the SPC Executive Committee and GreenBlue Board, the Joint Committee decided on a new structure for representation. Starting in January, one seat on the GreenBlue Board will be reserved for an SPC Executive Committee member, who will have full voting rights and carry the same responsibilities as any other board member. In addition, a non-voting seat on the Executive Committee will be added and reserved for a GreenBlue Board member.

Packaging Recovery Label System Update

In mid-October, we will be publicly announcing the initial pilot participants for the new Packaging Recovery Label System, which include various national brands. We have also recently launched the reference website for the pilot, www.how2recycle.info, which provides information about the new label and resources on local recycling availability. Please contact Anne Bedarf for more information about the pilot.

Upcoming Essentials of Sustainable Packaging Courses

The SPC’s Essentials of Sustainable Packaging (ESP) course is designed to give packaging professionals a deeper understanding of how sustainability considerations can be incorporated into the packaging development process. The next course, the first we have ever offered in Latin America, will take place November 15 in Mexico City hosted by AMEE (Mexican Packaging Association). Please see the event page for more information and to register for this course. An additional course will be held November 30 in Toronto, ON in conjunction with PAC. To register for the event, please visit the PAC website. We can also provide private courses tailored to your organization based on the ESP curriculum. Please contact Anne Bedarf if your company would be interested in a customized ESP course.

SPC Spring Meeting 2011: Preliminary Speakers Announced

Next year’s SPC Spring Meeting will be held in Toronto on April 23-25, 2012 and registration for the event will open in December. We already have an exciting agenda shaping up. Bob Willard, founder of Sustainability Advantage and internationally recognized speaker and advisor on corporate aspects of sustainability, will keynote the event. Other confirmed speakers include leaders from the Canadian Boreal Forestry Agreement, as well as Erin Schrode, co-founder of Teens Turning Green and New York University undergraduate, who will speak on the influence "Generation Next" or the "Millennials" have on corporate sustainability brands, of which packaging is an essential element. The agenda will also including sessions on EPR and Canadian Product Stewardship, trans-national shipping and pallet regulation, and alternative end-of-life options for plastic recovery. Stay tuned for more updates on the Spring Meeting!

Mineral Oil Migration Creates New Concern for Packaging

The following is an excerpt from a blog post by Project Associate Eric DesRoberts on GreenBlue's blog, In the Loop. Read all recent posts.

Findings from a series of recent Official Food Control Authority Laboratory reports coming out of Switzerland have raised concerns over mineral oil migration occurring in packaging made with recycled content. The reports focused on technical grade oils that are largely linked to inks used in newspapers entering the recycling stream. This research builds on previous studies suggesting that technical grade mineral oils pose health concerns and are found to accumulate in the liver, lymph nodes, and heart valves when ingested. There are additional concerns about aromatic mineral oils being carcinogenic, though their toxicology data remains uncertain. Read More
