Bicycle DNA
Did you know that over 1.5 million bicycles are stolen every year? Shockingly, less than 3% of these are ever returned to their rightful owners. One reason for this is the lack of a national bicycle registration database.
However, that is about to change. On April 1st, the Juno Beach Police Department was one of the first agencies in South Florida to launch a new crime prevention solution that links bicycles to a national database using DNA labels affixed to the bikes.
Each label has a unique PIN that is registered to the owner of the bicycle, and their contact information is loaded into the database accessible to every law enforcement agency throughout the nation.
The Juno Beach Police Department is routinely focused on high-target items, such as catalytic converters, construction equipment, bicycles, sporting goods, electronics, and jewelry, in their crime prevention efforts.
