Welcome from the Chair

The WAGPET Board would like to extend a very warm welcome to our GP registrars and prevocational doctors commencing their training with us in the second half of this year and to any new GP supervisors who are delivering training for the first time. We would also like to congratulate those who have completed their training and wish those well who await exam results.

Update from the CEO

“Primary Health Care is the new black, but can we wear it?”

After years in the relative wilderness, general practice now has many more prevocational doctor and registrar positions, new interdisciplinary models of care proposed, new disease specific care packages, increased support for mental health but not through general practitioners, more indigenous health training and preventive health, a possible new community health based medical school down the track – and the dark horse, Medicare Locals. Even GPET, our funder and facilitator, has changed its constitution – to read primary health care instead of general practice.

AGPT Applications for 2012 Closing Soon

Applications to enter the Australian General Practice Traininig (AGPT) program for 2012 close at 7am AWST on Friday 17th June. Applications are submitted directly to General Practice Education and Training (GPET) online.

Watch Dr Heather Brand, our very own Registrar Advisory Group (RAG) Chair, featured on the home page of ‘GP Australia’ the new website recently launched by the General Practice Registrars Association (GPRA).

Last Chance to Re-enrol for 2012

If you are a registrar currently enrolled in the AGPT Program, this is your one and only chance to re-enrol and secure a placement for 2012. Submit your online enrolment and placement preference form by 30 June to secure your place on the 2012 program. 2011 WAGPET GP Trainer Conference

132 general practitioners involved in Western Australian general practice education and training came together at the Vines from the 13-15th May, to learn from each other and to share their wisdom, experience and concerns.

Community Residency Report

A comprehensive report on WA’s very successful Community Residency Program has been completed and is now available online.

The report, commissioned by WAGPET and conducted by an independent consultancy firm, is both a point-in-time encapsulation of the history of the Program 2006-2010 and a blueprint that can be followed for those interested in adopting the model. WAGPET is grateful to all those who participated in the review for providing the rich body of information in the report.

2011 Awards - Nominations Now Open for ACRRM, GPET and the RACGP

Nominations for the 2011 ACRRM, GPET and RACGP awards are now open. As with previous years, the awards look to recognise individuals and organisations who have made outstanding contributions to the field of general practice.

First Wave Indigenous Health Training Scholarship Pilot

First Wave IHT Scholarship recipient Gabby Atlas, a fourth year medical student, recounts her experience of life as a GP at the Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service.

"In my summer vacation at the end of third year medicine last year, I embarked on a journey for 5 days up the coast of Western Australia for an incredible opportunity to experience medicine in a totally different setting. Thanks to the IHT (Indigenous Health Training) First Wave Scholarship, I had the privilege to observe, take part in and learn from, the medical services in Broome and surrounding communities."

Registrar Research Workshop 11-12 July, Brisbane

Come and find out more at the annual Registrar Research Workshop on 11 and 12 July 2011 in Brisbane. This is a two day workshop with 25 fully funded places for registrars interested in learning about primary health care research.

Research Week 15-22 July 2011

Research Week 2011, an online conference for all involved in GP training, will be held from 15-22 July following the Primary Health Care Research Conference.

Anaesthetics Opportunities

Congratulations to all GP registrars who have been offered an interview for the 12 month Anaesthetics training placements at Joondalup Health Campus. Interviews will be held on the 23rd June, with the successful applicants begining their placements in 2012.

WAGPET would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr Janet Zint, who joins the WAGPET team as a Medical Educator and Ms Bridgette Sara, the new Administration Officer for the Training and Education Team.

WAGPET Office

The remodel of the WAGPET office space is well underway and we would like to thank you again for you patience during this time. Renovations will continue through to early July and we anticipate a smooth transition into the new layout.

We are expecting to continue to deliver our services without interruption but thank you in advance for your patience if for some unforeseen reason we are unable to do so as quickly or efficiently as we would usually.
