Update from the CEO
“Primary Health Care is the new black, but can we wear it?”
After years in the relative wilderness, general practice now has many more prevocational doctor and registrar positions, new interdisciplinary models of care proposed, new disease specific care packages, increased support for mental health but not through general practitioners, more indigenous health training and preventive health, a possible new community health based medical school down the track – and the dark horse, Medicare Locals. Even GPET, our funder and facilitator, has changed its constitution – to read primary health care instead of general practice.

AGPT Applications for 2012 Closing Soon
Applications to enter the Australian General Practice Traininig (AGPT) program for 2012 close at 7am AWST on Friday 17th June. Applications are submitted directly to General Practice Education and Training (GPET) online.

Community Residency Report
A comprehensive report on WA’s very successful Community Residency Program has been completed and is now available online.
The report, commissioned by WAGPET and conducted by an independent consultancy firm, is both a point-in-time encapsulation of the history of the Program 2006-2010 and a blueprint that can be followed for those interested in adopting the model. WAGPET is grateful to all those who participated in the review for providing the rich body of information in the report.

First Wave Indigenous Health Training Scholarship Pilot
First Wave IHT Scholarship recipient Gabby Atlas, a fourth year medical student, recounts her experience of life as a GP at the Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service.
"In my summer vacation at the end of third year medicine last year, I embarked on a journey for 5 days up the coast of Western Australia for an incredible opportunity to experience medicine in a totally different setting. Thanks to the IHT (Indigenous Health Training) First Wave Scholarship, I had the privilege to observe, take part in and learn from, the medical services in Broome and surrounding communities."
