What's Next for Sustainability Certifications & Labels

Signed, Sealed... Delivered?

Certifications, on-pack labels and the standards that underpin them are powerful tools that have done much to change business practices and drive sustainability through global value chains. But 33 years after the world's first sustainability label - Germany's Blue Angel - appeared, a number of trends are emerging that indicate it is time to examine how these tools work for business and the extent to which they can scale.

Our latest report, Signed, Sealed... Delivered?, explores the value and challenges businesses find in using these tools, and looks behind certifications and beyond labels to propose a new model for the future.

Signed, Sealed...Delivered? urges a shift towards a new model where companies collaborate on developing and adhering to increasingly demanding standards, but compete to mobilize consumers into adopting more sustainable behaviors. This week on our blog we feature perspectives on how to transform consumer norms and behavior.

What do you see as the future for labels and certifications? Do they still have a role to play? Please join the conversation on our website, or via Twitter @SustAbility #beyondlabels.
