EWI researcher Rudy Herman is awarded a medal by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO)

Early in June 2011, Rudy Herman, a researcher with the EWI Department, will be given a medal by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). With this medal the Commission seeks to honour Rudy Herman for his contribution to the IOC and its activities. The IOC is an autonomous body within UNESCO that promotes scientific research aimed at learning more about oceans and coastal areas. The EWI Department wishes to congratulate Rudy Herman on this important recognition!

Flanders in Action round table for creative industries in Flanders on 27 May

What does the creative sector stand for today, and what are its future aims? How can creative industries contribute to the social challenges and the associated innovation process? Members from the sector were invited to jointly discuss this. Indeed, by investing in creative industries, Flanders can be an international trendsetter and create work, welfare and prosperity. More information is available on the site www.vlaandereninactie.be and will afterwards also be placed on the website of the EWI Department.

Government of Flanders invests heavily in innovation

Early in May, the Government of Flanders took three decisions to raise investments in science and innovation, on the proposal of the Flemish Minister for Innovation, Mrs Ingrid Lieten. First of all, the Innovation budget is increased by EUR 65 million in 2011 already. Secondly, the Government appropriates EUR 97 million to promote research projects within IWT. Thirdly, the Government reached a decision on a minimal growth path for the Innovation budget up to and including 2014. More information is available on the website of the EWI Department.

5th WIN networking moment on Thursday 9 June

On Thursday 9 June, the National Botanic Garden of Belgium opens its doors to the members of the WetenschapsInformatieNetwerk (Science Information Network). Apart from a presentation of the Botanic Garden the ECSITE network will be discussed, among other things. This is the European Network of Science Centres and Museums linking science communication professionals in over 400 institutions, spread over 50 countries. The network was established 20 years ago and connects member institutions through projects and activities and facilitates the exchange of ideas and expertise. Also, Roy Meijer, Science Information Officer at TU Delft, familiarises us with the new communication media that are used in science communication. More information is available on the WIN website.

Figure in the spotlight: 2.12%, the Flemish R&D intensity in 2009

In 2009, Flanders (regional figure) spent 2.12% of the GDP on R&D. This is a slight increase compared to the previous figure that was calculated for 2007. About 2/3 (or 1.39%) of the research is carried out in the private sector (BERD) and 1/3 (or 0.73%) in the public sector (non-BERD). A complete analysis is available at www.ewi-vlaanderen.be.
