Graduate and Masters Art Exhibitions

The much anticipated VCA Graduate Exhibition opens on Monday 25 November, with a feast of drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, painting, screen-based and digital media from students completing their Bachelor of Fine Art, Honours and Postgraduate Diploma of Visual Art. A fortnight later the VCA Masters Exhibition, will showcase work by graduating students from the Master of Contemporary Art and Master of Fine Art.

45th Annual Graduate Screenings
13 - 15 December

The high standard of films created by VCA film students is demonstrated through continued success at international film festivals including Melbourne, Cannes, Sundance, Palm Springs and more. The end-of-year screenings at ACMI are your first chance to see films from VCA’s emerging filmmaking talent before their release on the festival circuit.
Whether you are a keen movie buff or a budding filmmaker this event is one not to be missed.

Peter Toohey

Master of Music Recital Series
25 November – 9 December

The Master of Music (Performance) Recital Series begins next week at Melba Hall featuring nine performances from some of the finest musicians at the MCM. Pianist Peter Toohey will perform Franz Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy and Robert Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze; soprano Belinda Dalton will perform repertoire from Handel to Alban Berg, and clarinettist Sunpil Lee will perform the Australian premiere of Jörg Widmann’s Drei Schattentänze.

Production Launch 2013
26 - 28 November

Production graduates from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) will showcase their work in set design, costume, workshop, sound, lighting and stage management at the Production Graduate Launch Exhibition. The exhibition is an opportunity for the public, industry professionals and prospective students to explore the skilful work that goes on behind the scenes in creative and backstage roles.

Melbourne Now

VCA School of Art staff and alumni are well represented in Melbourne Now, a landmark exhibition opening at the National Gallery of Victoria this week. Amongst the 300 artists, architects and designers who are participating, there are 86 alumni and 18 current staff. Projects encompass the fullest range of contemporary art disciplines and practices, from painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics and contemporary jewellery, to photography, video, sound, performance, installation and online projects.

Three: Engaging communities with sound

Don Immel (Head of Brass) and Joel Brennan (Lecturer in Brass) have collaborated with local artists to bring relevant contemporary classical music to students and audiences in Alexandra, Euroa, Shepparton and Healesville. Secondary school students were engaged through a series of workshops delivered by MCM teaching staff and new works by Australian composers have also been commissioned.

Melbourne Prize for Music 2013

Congratulations to alumni Stephen Magnusson and Kate Kelsey-Sugg who respectively picked up last week the $30,000 Outstanding Musician Award and the $13,000 Development Award 2013 and Residency at the Melbourne Prize for Music 2013. The judges said guitarist Stephen Magnusson's work represents an outstanding example of creativity and skill; and Kate Kelsey-Sugg, pianist, vocalist, saxophonist and composer, demonstrates outstanding musical talent with the potential to develop her music career.

Art Association of Australia and New Zealand conference: ‘Inter-discipline’

The annual AAANZ conferences play a central part in the intellectual and institutional life of art history in Australia and New Zealand. Art historians will address new methods, ideas, practices, and pressing cultural concerns. Up-and-coming chamber group anon.’s recital New Identity, takes place at fortyfivedownstairs this December. Collaborating with fellow music makers oboist Jasper Ly and cellist Josie Graham, anon. (Nicole Tj and Thomas Lo) explores the world of Classical within the context of a modern society – a fresh take to listening, a novel visual experience; a new identity.

Kill Your Darlings

Kill Your Darlings is the true story of friendship and murder that led to the birth of an entire generation. This is the previously untold story of murder that brought together a young Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), and William Burroughs (Ben Foster) at Columbia University in 1944, providing the spark that would lead to their Beat Revolution.
