10 things you should know about STIs

space

Sexually transmitted infections, as the name suggests, are infections you can catch from sexual contact.  In the past STIs have been referred to as STDs or venereal diseases.

STIs are more common among the 15 to 29 year old age group, particularly infections like chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

If you or someone you know is sexually active here are 10 things to consider before your next sexual encounter.

  1. Get clued up about the types of STIs.
  2. Sometimes STIs have no symptoms.
  3. Read why you should get tested.
  4. Read how to protect yourself
  5. Some STIs like genital herpes and HIV/AIDS have no cure.
  6. STIs can affect your fertility. Read more here.
  7. Why you should tell your sexual partner/s if you test positive for an STI.
  8. What's in a sexual health check? Take the walk-through.
  9. If I had an STI, can I get it again?
  10. Where to get help or more information.
