North West smokers have been encouraged to quit for good this New Year by PHE's shocking new health harms campaign which launched on December 29. The campaign reveals the true damage to every part of a smoker's body including the bones, muscles, brain, teeth and eyes using images and a new short film which you can view here.
The campaign also tackles common misconceptions around hand-rolling tobacco which has increased in popularity significantly. Figures show in 1990, 18% of male smokers and 2% of female smokers said they smoked mainly hand-rolled cigarettes but by 2013 this had risen to 40% for men and 23% for women.
TFF amplified the campaign across the North West with partners and sent out sub-regional press releases with PHE North West. The story received some great coverage including in the Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo, News and Star, BBC Radio Cumbria, BBC Radio Manchester and Pure FM. We are delighted to announce that our Chief Executive Andrea Crossfield has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list for her services to public health and tobacco control in the North West. Andrea was part of shaping the national smokefree legislation which made it illegal to smoke in enclosed public spaces in July 2007 and has led TFF since it was formed as Smokefree North West in 2008. This is a greatly deserved accolade and we are incredibly proud of Andrea's achievements and the great work she continues to do both within the North West and nationally. You can read Andrea's latest blog post here.

Hi happy New Year from everyone at TFF, we hope you had a lovely Christmas.
Last month it was great to see regulations laid before Parliament for smokefree cars carrying children. This takes us another step closer to seeing children protected from secondhand smoke in cars and regulations will be voted on before the next general election. This means that we could see legislation put in place from October 1 this year.
We continue to work hard with partners for regulations to also be laid before Parliament on standardised tobacco packaging in January which must happen to allow a vote before the General Election in May.
If you're supportive you can help by signing an open letter to the Prime Minister and the Health Secretary calling for progress by clicking here.
