What's New?
Pioneer Courthouse Square Honors Melvin “Pete” Mark

“Pete was truly the pioneer of Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. His vision, leadership and sustained commitment to improving downtown Portland help create one of America’s great public spaces. Pete was always generous with his time, ideas and enthusiasm on our board of trustees. Both Pete and Mary are remarkable citizens who shaped our community with grace, good humor and a belief that Portland could be a world-class city, defined not just by a beautiful skyline but by its public spaces and wonderful people. Each year, 10 million people pass through Pioneer Courthouse Square. On behalf of everyone who loves downtown and Portland’s Living Room, we offer our condolences to the entire Mark family and everyone associated with Melvin Mark Companies,” said Dan Lavey, chair, Pioneer Courthouse Square Board of Trustees.

Portland Farmers Market at the Square

Pioneer Courthouse Square welcomes the return of Portland Farmers Market at the Square with the first market of the season this Monday, June 5th! The market will feature over 25 local farmers and food vendors on Mondays this Summer from June 5th-September 25th. Attendees can shop for fresh local produce, baked goods, and more from popular local vendors like Olympia Provisions, Baird Family Orchards, and Blossom Vinegars. Shoppers can also grab lunch from hot food carts like Verde Cocina or Thrive Sauce and Bowls and an afternoon treat from sweet vendors like Scoop Handmade Ice Cream. New Resilient Waterproof Membrane In Part With the Parks Replacement Bond

Pouring 375° liquid asphalt on a hot, sunny day may be sweat-inducing, but the conditions are perfect to lay a new waterproof membrane at the Square. The team from Pioneer Waterproofing is replacing the original membrane with a thicker, stronger new membrane to keep the tenant-occupied space under the Square dry. According to Susan Palmer of the Travel Portland Visitor Information Center, “We always had buckets around our workspace to catch the drips that were constant during the rainy season.” Over the years, the membrane was repaired in numerous spots. These patchwork fixes proved inadequate on a membrane that was in place about 10 years longer than its expected lifespan.

After the old bricks are removed and the existing membrane is scraped away, crew members pour a durable layer of reinforced asphalt that is more than five times thicker than the original. The resilient new membrane, made partly of recycled materials, will be an improvement and better suited to withstand any ground shifting and foot traffic from the more than 10 million annual Square visitors.
