But with more than 12 months of learnings into Covid and vaccination campaigns underway, there is the promise of future travel. It will, however, look very different, warns Air New Zealand. The airline is joining trials of ‘health passports’, in the form of the Travel Pass app from airline association IATA, in the hope it will expedite the opening of borders, and get paying tourists on its planes again. Containing verified information on a traveller's Covid-19 health status – both tests and vaccination data – as well as information on destination countries’ requirements, the mobile app is intended to help provide border control agencies with the confidence that they’re effectively mitigating the risk of importing Covid, and passengers with the confidence they’ve met travel requirements. Now we just need governments to sort out the issue of validating and integrating laboratory testing results and passing them to the app. Scientists, health authorities and governments collaborating on the use of smart technology – what could possibly go wrong?
