Reducing Single-Use PlasticsThe City of Ryde continues to lead the way in protecting the local environment after it adopted its first-ever Reduce Single-Use Plastic Policy. The policy officially prohibits the use of single-use plastic at Council events and phases out their use in all Council operations and Council-sponsored events over the next year. Council will also undertake a waste education program as part of the policy to assist local businesses and community organisations to reduce their use of single-use plastics. City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale said the new policy would help ensure plastics ending up in local waterways like the Parramatta and Lane Cover rivers. “To help the community join in the fight against waste, Council has installed filtered water refill stations at 24 popular locations around our City. Each have a water fountain, bottle refill point and some also include a dog bowl,” Clr Laxale said. “In 2018, water consumption from the refill stations equated to 22,668 litres, which is equivalent to 37,780 standard plastic water bottles that have not ended up in our ecosystem.” 80L Smarter Bin OptionsSave money, and reduce your impact on the environment with our smarter bin option. Tree Process SurveyThe NSW State Government has set a target to achieve tree canopy coverage of 40% across metro Sydney. Council’s Community Strategic Plan (2028) identified the protection of trees and open spaces as a key focus for Council into the future. The City of Ryde Council recognises the value of trees. The survey will provide information that will be used to inform the way in which we can assist the community in managing trees on public and private land. Electric Vehicles & Your Home's Solar PotentialDid you know that by 2030 it is anticipated that at least 50% of new car sales in Australia will be electric vehicles (EV)? Save Our RecyclingAcross NSW residents are committed to recycling – it’s a practical way to do our bit for the environment! Sending our recycling overseas is not a sustainable or smart solution. We need to collect, process and reuse recyclable material here in NSW. The NSW Government already collects hundreds of millions of dollars through its Waste Levy every single year. But only a small proportion is reinvested in waste and recycling. The City of Ryde wants the NSW Government to invest 100% of the waste levy into a state wide approach to waste and recycling.
