Day 5 - Saturday March 21

Fenney Returns to Form For the $25,000 Hildebrand Fund Grand Prix Victory

Tracy Fenney has taken tough to a whole new level. Just a month ago, she suffered a riding accident that resulted in a broken scapula, ribs and a punctured lung.

After three weeks she was back on a horse, and a week after that she was back in the winner's circle at the 70th annual Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, where she won the $30,000 Hildebrand Fund Grand Prix aboard MTM Centano.

The class was the featured event on March 21 in Katy, Texas, and drew a field of 20 to contest a challenging courrse set by Alan Wade.

"I feel all right," said Fenney smiling. "I'm a little sore, and my left turns aren't so good."

Thankfully, they were good enough for Fenney to post the fastest clear round in the three-horse jump-off.

Matt Cyphert was the pace setter with Lochinvar. "He did the correct thing going first," she said. "He was fast, but not crazy, and left all of the jumps up. Then you have to hope the person behind you has a jump down. You never know how that's going to work."

Daniel Bedoya returned next with Quattro and went for the victory. Their eight faults in 38.79 left them third, however.

Fenney and Centano then jumped a smooth and fast clear round in 38.22 seconds to clinch the win.

Fenney, of Flower Mound, Texas, arrived in Katy last week and worked her way back up slowly.

"I rode and jumped once in Ocala [Florida] with Mike [McCormick] before we left to come here," she said. "I schooled a little bit and jumped some small jumps, and then the first class I did here was a 1.25m. I was going to do Centano in the 1.35m, and Alan Wade said, 'You might as well do the Welcome for $10,000.'"

She and Centano placed fifth in the Welcome in preparation for tonight. She was confident that the 15-year-old Holsteiner gelding would help her out where she needed.

"Centano does everything. I've had him since he was 5, so 10 years," she said. "I'm pretty sure he's seen it all."

Although McCormick wasn't able to be at Pin Oak, Fenney had an able substitute in student Didi Mackenzie who set fences for her in the schooling area.

"I didn't have my security blanket here this week, and we have a new horse that I probably should have done [in the grand prix], but I didn't feel as comfortable not having Mike here," she said. "I've never had to think about that stuff."

Fenney, who has made winning at the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show a habit, was thrilled to be back.

"Pin Oak's great! I love the crowds; it's awesome, and the kids are so cute," she said. "It's an old-time horse show, and they do a great job. And when they have great course designers it's nice."

Magill and Speak No Evil Go Undefeated

Jack Magill purchased Speak No Evil just three weeks ago for owners Danny and Kathy Cummins. He was attracted to the chestnut American Saddlebred for his stunning good looks and beautiful movement.

And Magill's intuition was fully realized during the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, when in their debut competition he and Speak No Evil won the ASB Five Gaited Stake tonight, March 21.

"He's brand new. We bought him in Lousiville, Kentucky, and we are so excited," said Magill. "I actually bought him for Danny to ride in the amateur divisions, and we thought we would get our feet wet here at Pin Oak, and I think we got them wet real good!"

Magill, the head trainer at Jack Magill Stables in Arlington, Texas, said Speak No Evil, 7, had been a spectacular young horse before he had a short break. He's now back in action and resuming where he left off. Speak No Evil also won the ASB Five Gaited Open class on Wednesday, the qualifier for tonight's Stake.

"We’re really excited. He’s got the most amazing physique a saddle horse can have," said Magill. "They want long gorgeous necks, beautiful heads and to look just like a statue. And he’s just the poster child of what we dream about."

Even though their preparation today didn't quite go as planned due to torrential rains that changed some of the ring assignments, Magill  thought maybe the situation turned out to be a blessing.

"This is our first show with him, and we were a little nervous because he’s new to us," he said. "We thought we’d stretch his legs this morning and see what we had, and all the rings were occupied. So we grabbed the seat of our pants and off we went."

Magill described his Stake class ride as magnificent as Speak No Evil is quite the show horse and rises to the occasion.

"He’s just so charismatic in the ring," he said. "His neck comes up in the air, and he just swells. The minute you point him down the direction of the judge he knows, 'OK this is it. It's time to do it.' We're just so tickled with him."

Aredondo Speeds to Advanced Working Equitation Championship

In today's All-Breed Working Equitation competition, presented by Haras Dos Cavaleiros, riders contested the Speed Phase, the third and final event of the combined competition.

In the Advanced and Intermediate Levels, no one could match Raul Aredondo. He topped the two sections aboard Campino and Aire, respectively, both owned by Graciela Ramirez.

Aredondo, of Magnolia, Texas, also claimed the Overall Advanced Championship, which was based on the Dressage, Ease of Handling and Speed phases. Aire is a 7-year-old stallion bred by Lusitano breeder Haras Dos Cavaleiros.

"We were calmer than yesterday. The horse was more calm and relaxed," said Aredondo.

Aredondo joked that his favorite part of the Speed Phase was when he entered the ring. "I was very nervous," he said laughing.

Aredondo said some of his favorite moments in the Speed Phase where the barrel pattern and the slalom, where Aire was responsive and balanced.

He believed he made up time on his fellow competitors in the slalom, however, he was disappointed that the ring fell from his spear in the bull obstacle, which resulted in a few penalty points.

Aredondo, a Mexican native, has been in the United States for 1½ years. He currently trains for other people and hopes to eventually establish a small riding and training club. His specialties are the Lusitano and Spanish horses, All-Breed Working Equitation and training horses for bull fighting.

"It’s a great satisfaction to win this event," he said. "It's an important victory for those who contract me to train the horses. I'm so happy. Thank you a lot!"

At the International Level, Tiago Ernesto, the head trainer at Haras Dos Cavaleiros, was honored center ring for his demonstraions this week aboard Diablo DC, Cossaco and Adagio DC, all owned by Haras Dos Cavaleiros.
