North West smokers encouraged to sign up to Stoptober 2015

Stoptober 2015 has arrived and we are busy urging all North West smokers to take on the challenge this year. PHE are encouraging smokers to join together and quit with their friends, family and colleagues, as evidence reveals quitting together can dramatically improve people’s chances of successfully stopping.

Twenty per cent of people in the North West still smoke and we know that two thirds of people who smoke want to quit. Public Health England (PHE) has lots of tools to help support people who smoke to kick the habit for good with a 28-day mobile phone app, text support with daily updates, quitting advice and tips for coping, encouragement, support from thousands of people quitting together, as well as support, advice and medication on prescription from local stop smoking services.

The Stoptober roadshow will be visiting the North West on Friday 18 September in Preston and Saturday 19 September in Manchester. We hope to build on the 32,000 people we saw sign up in our region last year for another successful Stoptober campaign. You can read our regional press release by clicking here.

Editor's note

Hi , welcome to your September eNews.

As we approach the end of summer, we are very pleased with the amazing response our Smokefree Summer campaign has received from partners, event organisers and members of the public. This is the first year that we have run the campaign and our survey has highlighted a large demand for smokefree family-friendly events. We look forward to building on the campaign next Summer to create more smokefree healthy events for children and families to enjoy.

It's great to see the return of PHE's National Stoptober campaign this month. We know that two thirds of smokers want to quit and the campaign is a great opportunity for people who smoke to join together and quit with lots of free help and support.

This year the Stoptober campaign has been combined with preparing people for the upcoming ban on smoking in cars on October 1. We will be working hard this month to ensure that people who smoke in our region are aware of the change, know the facts to help them comply with the law and most importantly protect children from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
