Mailout Soundtrack

Double pass to Abbe May at Mojos this Sunday..

Fresh in! check unreleased Felicity Groom tracks here. Felicity is touring nationally with John Butler thru March & April.

Perth based super rhythmic songwriters Runner launched the tune Outlines & Colours to a sold out William St Bird  last Friday check the tune via their soundcloud here

Amber Fresh as well as playing the Prince Rama gig at Mojos recently, has reviewed it. Amber's subtle humour & constant personal perspective, whilst so refreshing, still allows for some critique of the touring loopers!

Tahlia Palmer wasnt into sport much. Recently however her friend Pete Long challenged some strangers to arm wrestles. The finer points are illustrated below.

Lyndon Blue is back! Well, he's not back in Perth but he's back writing for you in this here events & articles newsletter. The man's temporally themed article below is just another example of why we missed him so.

First in here gets a double pass to Abbe May at Mojos this Sunday night!

PRINCE RAMA WITH SALAMANDER, CARBUNCLE AND TUSK @ MOJOS ON 2 FEB 2012

One day, going to visit Casey at the workshop, a song came on the radio. I called up the station and asked the man, “Who is this, who is blowing my mind?” And he said “Young lady, this band is Prince Rama, who you’re going to play with twice in a few weeks time. Pretty exciting for you, darling. Now let’s go swim in the river.” Well, he only said “Prince Rama”, but the rest I added. A few weeks later I was at John Lekias’ house. I call him “Legolas” for a nickname. It was band practice for the last time, for the new lineup of Carbuncle. And we were ready enough to play a show. I don’t usually get to travel with “the whole band” in a car to the show, but this was my chance. Pity all I could think about was burger burger burger, and pity I was also pitying myself for recently deciding to become a vegetarian again. Pumpkin. It ain’t no beef.

ARM WRESTLING OPENED MY MIND

Last night I was spending some quality time with a friend from Perth who is here in Melbourne for a little bit. He’s an excellent dude, a straight up excellent time, complete with a mullet and a filthy mustache. A mutual friend once pointed out that all dudes in Melbourne try to look like our friend Pete, while Pete just goes along doing his thing without being a jerk, smiling, illustrating, managing a tiki bar, winning competitions to go to Jamaica, it’s all just totally natural. People either want to be him or make out with him (except me, I just want him to buy me cocktails and to smoke his cigarettes) so when I found out he was visiting I was all “YAY HE’S GOING TO SHOW ALL THE MELBOURNE FUCKS HOW IT’S DONE”. What I didn’t realise was that this would actually mean he’d be arm wrestling strangers in the beer garden of Bar Open.

DO THE PARIS-PERTH TIME WARP

I awoke to an alarm early this morning. I was snoozing on a mattress just centimetres below the frost-covered roof of an apartment building, nestled between Paris' 3rd and 10th arrondisements. A small heater rendered the tiny room warm, if not hot, but the breeze outside the window carried in it scraps of yesterday's snow. The windows rattled gently like chattering teeth.

Rubbing sleep from bleary eyes, it occured to me I had told people I'd be back in Perth by now. Today... Tuesday. Being seven hours behind my Perth counterparts, I really should have written something for the CoolPerthNights mailout by now. Shit. Rapidly consumed hot coffee, some baguette toasted in the oven, leftover condiments. Four layers of clothing, poorly lit internet café on the corner.

Email from CPN headquarters: Do hope you can give us something. Food, air, music, indoor smoking, sexuality, aeroplanes, eurocrisis, love, Perth music from euro perspective…

Search And Destroy - AN ODE TO TURBONEGRO...

at rocket room, perth

Accredited with creating deathpunk - the dirty, festering, sin-laden brother of hardcore. A slimy concoction of early punk, hardcore, tinges of Venom-esque heavy metal and ’70s arena rock, deathpunk is loud and abrasive yet indulgent, intelligent and witty.

Now SEARCH & DESTROY are here to celebrate the genre's only purveyors Turbonegro with a late night affair at the Rocket Room.

Acclaimed interstate spinster DJ Nathan 'Guns' Sin, founder of the former great Sin Club nights, will join residents' Holly Doll and Jessica Kill for an evening of punk, metal and rock debauchery.

Wear a sailor hat to join in the festivities and you can choose the Turbonegro requests we play on the night!

This could be our last event at the Rocket Room, so come down and show your support! From midnight, Friday 10 Feb.

February Voicebox

Chris was born in Fremantle. Since then, he has learned to do many things including bookbinding, writing, and making music. He was once called a sonic terrorist by a family member, but his poetry is not so experimental. If you believe in the interconnectedness of all things, you could argue that he has been widely published in many respected journals.

Zan Ross has almost become a fixture on the Perth Poetry scene over the past fifteen years. She has been published in all the usual journals in Australia as well as a few in Canada, France, Hungary, and the U.S. She has also appeared in zines, both on-line and not. Wasteland

at Luna Outdoor tonight!

One man's garbage is another man's art. That's
the lesson in Lucy Walker's fascinating documentary -
a portrait of Vik Muniz, a successful Brooklyn-based artist. He returns to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of catadores - or self-designated pickers of recyclable materials.

Life in Miniature

in northbridge

Cramped, cosy, cool contemporary dance.

Want to test drive life in a caravan before you take that trip around Australia? Anything is Valid Dance Theatre, a Perth-based contemporary dance company serves up their unique perspective of a road trip in the confines of a caravan at the 2012 Perth Fringe Festival.

Life in Miniature explores the great Australian caravan holiday, an experience to be endured or embraced. Reflecting on the inevitable experiences of spending long periods on the road, interactions become magnified and reality becomes distorted as two friends living out of a caravan try to survive the elements… and each other.

Funny and poignant, this is an engaging work created for an intimate audience that invites you to reflect on life on a small scale
