Three more pump stations go chlorine-free

An above ground well head.

Update: Monday 13 August 2018

We’ve stopped chlorine treatment at a further three pump stations in the city — Grampian, Lake Terrace and Hills.

Now the below ground well heads have been isolated, unchlorinated water can be supplied from the secure above ground well heads at these pump stations.

Hills supplies about 9,000 people, and Lake Terrace and Grampian each supply about 1,500 people.

The actual number supplied by any pump station depends on demand and how many pump stations are operating across the network.

This now means there are nine pump stations across the city that are not being treated with chlorine, although as demand increases we may need to start using below ground well heads again. If that is the case, the water will need to be chlorinated.

Signs of progress

The well site at Kainga is all fenced off and marked with contractors signs ahead of work starting on the well head upgrade.

We’re doing work to make the above ground well head secure. This includes over-drilling the existing well and grouting around the well casing to make sure that contaminants can’t enter the aquifer. Work is expected to be finished in October.

This is part of the first stage of works on 23 well heads at seven pump stations, costing about $7.4 million. You will find more detail about this work on our Well head improvements webpage
