Student Success Centre Launched

The University of Lethbridge is launching a Student Success Centre – a new business unit that brings together a number of different resources and services to help students successfully navigate through their university experiences.

“This is a great step forward for the University of Lethbridge, as we move forward with a coordinated approach to student engagement," said Dr. Judith Lapadat, the U of L’s Associate Vice-President (Students).

Building on the recommendations of an all-campus recruitment strategy committee, the Student Success Centre will be managed by Trish Jackson, a U of L grad (BASc ’03), former SU executive member and international recruitment officer.

Jackson will be joined by campus outreach coordinator Auburn Philips (MA’12) and support personnel drawn from other offices on campus to work with students to ensure they get the most out of their university experience.

A Learning Strategist position and a Tutoring Coordinator position are in the process of being filled, and will add tutoring assistance, time management help and student leadership development to the complement of services offered through the Centre.

The Centre is an extension of activities that the Recruitment & Student Life office and Counselling Services have created over the past seven years to assist high school students in their transition to university life, only it will be extended to all years and levels of study, and to all three campuses. U of L study to examine how social and economic stressors affect the health of Aboriginal adults

In a first-of-its-kind study, University of Lethbridge researchers are examining how the social and economic adversity faced by Aboriginal peoples may affect their biological health.

This new study, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, will be co-lead by three researchers at the U of L, pulling together research strengths from health sciences, kinesiology and neuroscience.

Stressful experiences are an inevitable part of life, but repeated and chronic exposure to uncontrollable stressors can disrupt the function of neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems. Markers of biological disruption can be identified well before the clinical markers of disease are detected. Learn more here.

U of L researcher and community partners to play key role in national homelessness initiative

University of Lethbridge researcher Dr. Yale Belanger will play a key role in a national initiative that will gather information on the state of homelessness in Canada and will disseminate that knowledge to front-line providers.

The Canadian Observatory on Homelessness was recently created through a $2.5 million investment from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, which promotes and assists research and scholarship in the social sciences and humanities.

The Observatory’s work will be particularly relevant in Alberta, as recent province-wide flooding may increase the number of individuals who could be homeless. Learn more here.
