Welcome

Welcome to the final edition of CEO Communique for 2011. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all AHCSA’s friends and colleagues a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year!!

In the lead up to Christmas, the work of AHCSA has not slowed a bit! We continue to build on previous good work to meet the needs of our members and strengthen existing partnerships.

2011 saw a solidifying of partnerships between AHCSA, and commonwealth and state governments, particularly the SA Health Aboriginal Health Branch and Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. We are pleased that our partners engage us in respectful, constructive and two way dialogue with the common aim of improving Aboriginal health outcomes.

All in all it has been an amazing year and I am sure that, like me, you are probably looking forward to a well-earned break. I would like to thank all the staff at AHCSA, the Members Council and our partners for all their hard work in 2011. Rest up well because 2012 is going to be even bigger and better as we work together to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people in SA.

Have a wonderful holiday break and I will see you in the New Year!

Kind regards

Mary Buckskin
Chief Executive Officer

Education & Training

As we near the end of the year, the Education and Training team have been busy with a number of graduations across the state.

Congratulations to the 51 students who attended the recent graduation ceremony in Adelaide. The graduates gained a variety of qualifications including Certificate III and IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. A further 13 students recently graduated from Certificate IV in Indigenous Research Capacity Building.

A special mention also to the upcoming Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care (AMIC) graduates who have completed their Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care, as well as specialised AMIC units.

Well done to all graduates!! They are a reminder of the strength of the Aboriginal community controlled health sector as we continue to build the capacity of our Aboriginal health workforce. I’m sure the Education and Training team will continue to grow and 2012 promises to be as busy as ever for them.

Trachoma Elimination

The Trachoma Elimination team has been travelling across regional and remote South Australia as it conducts trachoma screening in collaboration with Country Health SA. The screening has detected incidence of trachoma within Aboriginal communities and the team will work with health services to assist with ongoing screening, prevention and treatment options for those affected by trachoma.

E-Health

The E-Health team has been out and about recently, working with members to get prepared for the introduction of Patient Electronic Health Records and how this measure will impact on their services and community members. The team has a very short timeframe to achieve a lot, so 2012 will be challenging but exciting.

Strategic Plan

Throughout 2011, AHCSA has been working on revising and revitalising its strategic and business plans. In a recent meeting, the AHCSA Members Council endorsed the AHCSA Strategic Plan 2011-14. We aim to hold a launch in 2012 and I am very pleased with the strategic direction towards which AHCSA is headed under the guidance of our Members Council. I would like to take this opportunity to commend the Council for its dedication and diligence over the last year and I look forward to continuing to work with them in 2012.
