Click here April 2021 Impact Newsletter CPC Staff and Community Members Meet with NYC Council Members for 4th Annual City Advocacy DayOn April 14th, CPC held its 4th Annual City Advocacy Day, meeting with over 20 City Council Members and their staff. CPC staff and community members discussed how CPC has been supporting our communities during COVID-19, why it is critical that we fund our programs and human services staff, the increase in AAPI hate, and how we need to invest in the AAPI community's long-term healing and recovery. The day concluded with a press conference with Council Members and community members speaking.EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong. CPC Speaks at Columbia University Irving Medical Center AAPI Employee Resource Group On April 7th, CPC joined Columbia University Irving Medical Center AAPI Employee Resource Group panel to speak about the 171-year history of AAPI injustices, and what organizations can do about anti-AAPI rhetoric and hate. Korean Child Care Providers Complete 15-Hour Health and Safety Training CourseOn April 17th, seven Korean child care providers completed their training as part of CPC Early Childhood Learning and Wellness' 15-hour, State-approved course. This free course covers topics such as preventing injuries, supervision, SIDS, SBS, child abuse, food safety, preventing disease transmission, and caring for ill children.This program is funded in part by the Korean American Community Foundation. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age. Our Community, Our Stories - CPC Impacts Generations: The Chu Family In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, CPC is proud to announce the launch of “Our Community, Our Stories” campaign to share the personal stories of different community members directly impacted by CPC. Our first community story features the family of Billie and Wendy Chu. The Chu family has been involved with CPC for three generations. Soar Over Hate Equips Seniors at Hong Ning with Safety Materials On April 8th, Michelle Tran, a Mount Sinai medical student, and her 8th grade Apex for Youth mentee, Tiffany Yuen, fundraised money to purchase and distribute safety alarms and printed booklets about responding and reporting hate crimes to senior residents of Hong Ning Housing. Their initiative, which they have named Soar Over Hate, aims to equip vulnerable Asian elderly, women, and LGBTQ+ in NYC with self-defense materials to make them feel more safe walking around the city. COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTWe empower New Yorkers to represent and to advocate for themselves and their communities because their leadership is essential for positive—and lasting—social change. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence. Congratulations to Alice Wong, Chief of Staff, Named to City & State's Nonprofit 40 Under 40 Rising Star Alice Wong, CPC Chief of Staff, for being recognized by City and State as a 2021 Nonprofit 40 Under 40 Rising Star! Alice has spoken out about the rise in anti-Asian violence and was recently quoted in "Older Asians Face ‘A Whole Wave’ of Hate Hidden in Official NYPD Stats" from The City. The City Quotes CPC About Pandemic's Impacts on Immigrant Communities The City has a story on the role of immigrants in New York City's recovery and quotes Shuping Deng, supervisor of the ONA Opportunity Center located at CPC Brooklyn Community Center. Shuping discussed how immigrants are dealing with uncertainty and a rise in anti-Asian harassment and violence. Our Community, Our Stories - CPC Empowers the Achievement of Potential: Mary Cheng Our second community story as part of our celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month features Mary Cheng. Mary is not only a CPC alum, but also is now CPC’s Director of Childhood Development Services thanks to that experience growing up. CPC Quoted in Gothamist Article on Financial Impact of Pandemic on Nonprofits Gothamist has a story on the Center for an Urban Future’s new report which reveals that many nonprofit organizations on the frontlines of serving New Yorkers in need during the past year are now on the precipice of financial catastrophe. CPC Statement on the NYS FY21-22 Enacted Budget CPC applauds the enacted State budget that delivers on critical needs for Asian American & Pacific Islanders, communities of color, immigrants, low-income New Yorkers, and highlights the need for even further investment for a just recovery. CPC Statement on Ending the 24-Hour Rule in NYS Home Care The Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc. (CPC) and its subsidiary, the CPC Home Attendant Program, Inc. (HAP), are each in full support of home care workers who are calling for the end of the “24-hour workday.” The State must immediately end the 24-hour rule in favor of two 12-hour split shifts where home care workers are fully compensated for each hour worked.
