Myofascial Release
Recently, our physical therapist assistant Nikki Smith took advanced coursework in myofascial release to expand her practice and patient care. Myofascial release (MFR) is a therapeutic means of working with fascia (connective tissue) and the nervous system, both of which can contribute to pain and dysfunction. The purpose of fascia is to bind some structures together while letting others slide over each other. When fascia becomes shortened or restricted due to trauma, overuse, injury or trauma, it causes pressure on pain-sensitive structures. With MFR, light pressure is applied to dry skin (ie – no oils or lotions) and held for a prolonged period of time (2-5 min), allowing the fascia to stretch and release the restriction. The result is a message to the brain via the nerves that the previous “threat” or injury has been addressed, and the brain responds by giving the signal
to relax and decrease pain.
MFR is an ideal treatment for people who are too sensitive or painful for traditional massage techniques, and for those suffering from any of the following:
-
Poor posture
-
Migranes
-
TMJ pain or tightness
-
Shoulder pain
-
Carpal tunnel syndrome
-
Breathing limitations
-
Muscle spasms
-
Back and/or neck pain
-
Nerve pain or numbness/tingling
-
Abdominal or pelvic pain
-
Sciatic, hip or leg pain
Please call our clinic with any questions or to schedule an evaluation and physical therapy treatment.
