Highlight: Postdoctoberfest is back!


The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and the Graduate School are pleased to invite all Brown postdocs to celebrate the season at Postdoctoberfest 2014! Come to the Crystal Room in Alumnae Hall after work on October 3 to meet other postdocs and enjoy a snack and a beer on us. Take Action to Encourage Congress to Restore NIH Funding
Restoring the federal government’s investment in medical research and our biomedical research workforce is a national priority. Here are some ways you can let Congress know you support the passing of the FY 2015 Labor-HHS spending bill to restore sequestration cuts: send an e-mail to your representatives in the U.S. Congress & the House of Representatives and attend a FASEB webinar (Thursday, October 2 at 12 PM--RSVP to Meghan McCabe at mmccabe@faseb.org) to learn about new advocacy tools and other ways to show your support of funding for federal research agencies.

2015 Child Care Subsidy Program
University Human Resources is now accepting Child Care Subsidy applications for calendar year 2015. Eligible faculty, non-union staff, Dining Services union employees, postdoctoral research associates, postdoctoral research fellows, graduate students, and medical students must submit their applications by October 17, 2014. Versatile PhD Panel Discussions on Subject Matter Consulting
Versatile PhD will host a free web-based asynchronous panel discussion on Subject Matter Consulting in STEM fields September 22-26. All panelists are PhD or ABD and became consultants based on the subject matter knowledge they developed during their PhD programs. Some are independent consultants, others work for consulting organizations--the point is, they found a need for their knowledge outside the academy. Panelists will introduce themselves on September 22, and answer your questions in a threaded discussion board format for the rest of the week. Future of Research Symposium
The Future of Research Symposium is a postdoc-organized meeting that will focus on factors shifting the landscape of scientific research: tight budgets, evolving models of both publishing and evaluation, and questions about training and workforce stability. Talks and panel discussions will be followed by highly interactive workshops designed to give students and postdocs a voice in the ongoing dialog about policies that shape our scientific future. RNA Silencing in Plants
Keystone Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology will bring together leaders in the field of RNA silencing from around the world with the specific goal of exploring these emerging new functions, and relating them to what is known about existing mechanisms. The explosion of interest in small RNA pathways in animals means that many of these fundamental mechanisms have major implications in human health, and parallels between some of these mechanisms will also be explored.
