THE WEEK AHEAD at the UN SECURITY COUNCIL

17-21 September 2018

Dear Colleague,

On Monday, (17 September), there will be a briefing on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)/non-proliferation, which is likely to focus on the recent report of the Panel of Experts.

Also on Monday, the Council will hold its quarterly debate on Afghanistan. Tadamichi Yamamoto, Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), and Ramiz Bakhtiar, the newly-elected Youth Representative of Afghanistan to the UN for 2018, are expected to brief.

On Tuesday (18 September), briefings are planned on the political and humanitarian situations in Syria by Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock, respectively.

Also on Tuesday (18 September), Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan Nicholas Haysom are scheduled to brief on the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the situation in South Sudan. A civil society representative may brief as well. 

There will be a briefing on the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) on Thursday (20 September) by Lacroix.

Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov will provide the briefing at the monthly Middle East (Israel/Palestine) meeting on Thursday.

At the subsidiary body level, the Military Staff Committee is scheduled to convene on Friday (21 September) to discuss the situation in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the UN Intelligence Policy Framework.
