New U of L residence complex to be named Mt. Blakiston House

The mountain peaks of Waterton Lakes National Park will serve as inspiration for the naming of the University of Lethbridge’s newest student residence, scheduled to open in fall, 2013.

The Phase III housing complex will adopt a naming convention that represents some of the highest mountain peaks in Waterton.

The first such structure will be named Mt. Blakiston House, as recently approved by the U of L’s Board of Governors.

Future buildings will acknowledge nearby peaks, such as Mt. Lineham, Mt. Hawkins, Mt. Alderson and Mt. Carthew.

Mt. Blakiston, the tallest mountain in Waterton Lakes National Park (9,547 ft), was named in 1858 for British explorer Thomas Blakiston. Learn more here.

Library Update: Level 9 collection more accessible

Flood damage to the Library caused by a water main break in early June resulted in service disruptions, including reduced study space, and no access to a portion of the collection housed on Level 9.

Over the past 2 months,  significant progress has been made toward readying the Library for the Fall semester.  While work continues  it has been determined that as of Wednesday, August 7, Library staff will be able to retrieve items from the collection on L9 at the request of patrons.  The Level 9 area is still an active construction site and remains closed to general Library traffic.

If you need an item from this part of the collection please take your request to the General Services Desk on Level 10.

For all your Library-related queries, visit them in person, or online, here

Planned non-parenthood: U of L researcher explores why women choose not to have children

University of Lethbridge Sociology researcher Gillian Ayers has looked into the notion of planned non-parenthood, and found some startling insights into why people choose not to have children.

As part of her U of L master’s thesis, Ayers, now a Research Associate  working with Dr. Claudia Malacrida (Sociology)  interviewed women in southern Alberta who self-identified as being childless by choice.

She was interested in their motivation for choosing to be childless, and also wanted to learn more about the stigma and social pressures that were imposed on childless people from friends, family members, peers and colleagues.

Among other results, what she found was that the women she spoke with were not selfish, not ‘waiting for Mr (or Ms) right,’ not child haters – and very serious about their choice. Learn more here
