This issue of IELR considers the concept of the magic circle and the idea that games take place within a bounded space, governed by their own rules and insulated, at least to some extent, from the messiness of ordinary life. The articles in this issue examine whether this concept can still meaningfully prevail or if it has been overtaken by the reality that modern games are governed by overlapping systems of law, platform rules, technical architecture and player communities.
