When thousands of people gathered in Manchester’s Albert Square in vigil the day after 22 innocent people were massacred in a suicide bombing it was poet Tony Walsh who put their grief and their defiance into words with his spine tingling poem This is the Place. John Gardner examines the power of the poem and compares it to Percy Shelley’s works about the Manchester Peterloo Massacre 200 years ago. Exactly why flamingos stand on one leg for long periods of time is something of a mystery. But by manipulating and dissecting dead specimens, scientists have at least discovered how the birds manage it without getting tired. Paul Rose explains how their amazing legs work.
Suave, debonair and with suitably chiseled good looks, the late Sir Roger Moore was the perfect gentleman hero of the 1960s. Coming after Sean Connery, his turn as James Bond was more of a lover than Connery’s fighter – but if there’s anything that Moore taught the world, it was not to take oneself too seriously.
