Warehousing Strategy at Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. (VGCA)

The director of warehousing and logistics at Volkswagen Group Canada (VGCA) had been tasked with analyzing the capacity of the Toronto parts distribution center to support an aggressive growth plan that involved a series of new product launches and product facelifts. Expecting that expansion of the facility would be necessary, the director needed to establish the additional warehouse capacity required, when it would be needed by and which expansion option made the most sense. The case provides an opportunity to explore issues involving capacity analysis in a supply chain context. Students are expected to use data provided in the case to evaluate alternatives and develop appropriate recommendations. It also provides students the opportunity to gain insights into the automotive industry and the operational challenges companies face related to aftersales parts warehousing and distribution. This case was written for an undergraduate or MBA supply chain or operations class dealing with capacity analysis in a logistics setting. The context is relevant to both the service and manufacturing sectors.

Image Pipeline Services: Weighing the Buyout Offer

The president of Pipeline Imaging Systems, is taking a step back from the past few weeks where he has spent virtually all his waking time working on his new business. The president has launched a new pipeline service to compete in Edmonton’s oil sands industry. A few months after he started his business, he controls virtually the entire market, but competitors will be encroaching on his turf. One has offered to purchase his buiness and the president wants to weigh his options before agreeing to sell or continuing to compete. There are several topics that can be discussed with this case: How has Image Pipeline come to dominate its market in Alberta? What is your assessment of Daniel Martindale's prospects for the next year? What should Martindale do about the offer in front of him?

DHL Supply Chain

The degradation of the environment has led many governments and customers to pressurize businesses to make their operations more nature-friendly. The case illustrates an effective example of corporate social responsibility. Specifically, it demonstrates how a small increase in a supply chain budget can drastically reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in the transportation of LCD TVs from their manufacturing bases to a distribution centre. The case highlights optimization concepts within the contemporary objective of minimizing carbon dioxide emission. Students get to design (or complete) a medium-sized optimization template using the SOLVER tool. The difficulty level should be within the capabilities of undergraduates and MBA students enrolled in analytics courses.
