Highland Creek Green Team - Spring into Action this April!

Hello Highland Creek Green Team,

Happy Spring! Soon we'll have nice sunny weather and it'll be time to spend our days outdoors. We've got several events and projects coming up this season. I hope to see many of you outside!

If you know anyone who is interested in volunteering with us in the Highland Creek watershed, they can sign up to receive these updates.

March Wrap-up

March 2015 was a great month for the Green Team. Some highlights include:

  • Several of us attended the Toronto Park Summit. This was a great oppotunity to be inspired by Park People and examples of park projects from across Canada. If you missed it, check out the featured park group video series.

Upcoming Volunteer Activites

Please let me know if you'd like to help out with any of these events.

  • A very special Jane's Walk Shop is coming to Scarborough On Wednesday, April 15 at 6:00 PM. Potential Jane's Walk leaders will meet at Scarborough Museum to learn how to lead a Jane's Walk. If you view the map, you will see stop 3 is about the local water systems. If someone would like to attend and speak for a minute about the Highland Creek Green Team at that stop, that would be a great way to promote our group. I will provide handouts for you to take to the event.
  • Clean TO Together is on April 18 and 19 this year. There are many registered events in the Highland Creek watershed. A few are even being organized by our members! Check out the posters for the Cedar Brook Park, KGO, and McCowan Park clean-ups. Chester Le Community Center will be holding their clean-up on April 22. I'll be helping out at the Centennial College clean-up (more info to be posted on the blog next week) and I'd encourage you all to take part!
  • Paddle the Don is coming up on Sunday, May 3. As acknowledgement for the contributions the Highland Creek Green Team has made working alongside TRCA we have been offered a chance to participate. We will be provided with a free canoe for two people to paddle and represent our group. If you are interested in taking part, please let me know by Wednesday, April 15. This is a once-in-a-year opportunity and a wonderful way to experience our local watershed.
  • May 1 - 3 is the Jane's Walk festival weekend. There are several walks taking place throughout Scarborough. If you'd like to take part or lead a walk, please visit the website to register or join the Walk Shop on April 15.
  • The Cultural Hotspot East Legacy weekend takes place on Saturday, May 9. The main event will be Art on the Road hosted by R.H. King Academy on Kingston Road. This is a very fun event that features a showcase at 11:00 AM, Jane's Walks from noon - 3:00 PM, and an open mic event at the local pub. We have been offered a table for the day. If you'd like to attend and staff our table, please let me know.
  • Our Milliken Park Neighbourhood Rain Garden project is gearing up for an exciting first season. We will have a volunteer training evening on Thursday, May 14 at 5:30. The community planting day and grand opening take place on Sunday, May 24 from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. We will then host a series of workshops and guided walks so that residents can learn how to build their own rain gardens. Sign-up to help with this project and I will send additional information.
  • Birkdale Art in the Park takes place on June 6, from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. This is an annual one day outdoor community arts festival that is held in Birkdale Ravine. We've been offered a table. If you are available to staff the table (shifts are 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM and 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM), please let me know.

Thank you for your ongoing support! I really enjoy working with all of you and I'm looking forward to this busy spring season.
