mixed media, 3 ft × 3 ft, 2014

NEW YORK — In conjunction with its current gallery exhibition Father of Blindfold Art Medicine, Tally Beck Contemporary will present a series of special performances by artist and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner Jon Tsoi at the Queens Museum as part of Passport Thursdays every Thursday from July 31 through August 21, 2014. Each Thursday evening's performance will run from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The artist will perform a blindfolded art diagnosis of visitors’ physical, mental and spiritual condition and recommend which artwork in the Queens Museum’s current exhibitions can help promote balance for the guests’ current states of being.

Passport Thursdays is a free weekly presentation of live music, dance, and film that takes place outside the Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Tsoi's performance uses the basis of qigong, a traditional form of Chinese medicine, in combination with Taoist philosophy. Tsoi recommends colors and shapes to restore the balance of yin and yang.

Jon Tsoi is an artist originally from China. He studied at the Teachers' College of Sichuan. After moving to the United States in 1979, he attended classes at Montclair State University of New Jersey and The Art Students League of New York in the early 1980s. As a certified acupuncturist, Tsoi consciously connects art making and viewing with Chinese medicine practices and Taoist Philosophy.

Tsoi’s inquisitive nature prompted him to make the connection between meditation, spirituality, and healing with closed eyes guided by qi (energy) to create art as an internal journey that results in the mystery of creation. Tally Beck Contemporary has hosted his blindfolded performances as part of his solo exhibition of 15 of his acrylic and mixed-media works on canvas.

The exhibition Father of Blindfold Art Medicine will remain open Wednesdays to Sundays until August 29, 2014, at Tally Beck Contemporary, at 42 Rivington Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
