Summer chilling: welcome to the Weimar cultural feast

GermanyisWunderbar

The intellectual city of Goethe and Schiller and the birthplace of Weimar Classicism adds a new dimension come the summer, when it becomes a city of the soul, too. Green areas, parks and river banks lend themselves to warm summer nights with open air concerts and visual treats. The choice ranges from big orchestral concerts performed by the likes of the Staatskapelle Weimar (pictured left), to the Genius Loci Weimar Festival, which brings facades to life through the projection of video imagery, with musical accompaniment. Both festivals can be ideally combined with a stay in this UNESCO World Heritage city, which is particularly green in the summer.

Summer chilling: canals, lakes and beaches of Leipzig

GermanyisWunderbar

Summer in the city doesn't have to be stressful. Especially when that city has cool water, shady parks and welcoming restaurants, as does Leipzig and its region. Rent a canoe and paddle through the beautiful canals (left) towards Leipzig's New Lakeland, where more than 20 lakes and Saxony’s largest beach are waiting. Or else ride the waterways with MS Weltfrieden (literally 'world peace'). Then wind down at the end of the day in a beautiful beer garden like Schreber´s, which brings together lip-smacking regional beer, barbecue delicacies and the famous Schrebergarten (allotment garden) atmosphere. Then, when night falls, feel re-energised by all the possibilities on offer in the alternative city guide Hidden Leipzig.

Summer chilling: Caribbean groove with Kuhnle-Tours

GermanyisWunderbar

For 2017's summer season, houseboat operator Kuhnle-Tours has initiated a new Caribbean-style bar at their Hafendorf Müritz marina on the shores of Lake Müritz, in the lakeland state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Pirates Bar is the new meeting place on the shore, designed for everyone, whether you arrive by boat, bike or car, from nearby Berlin or from overseas. There's white sand, sunshades and sun-loungers, cool beers and delicious cocktails, along with Carribean beats and a laid back vibe.  An ideal place to wait for your boat to come in.

Greek flavour to Kassel's huge modern art exhibition

GermanyisWunderbar

documenta 14, which runs until September 17, is one of the largest art exhibitions in the world. It takes place once every five years in this otherwise unappealing city in the midriff of Germany, although the big difference this year is that it kicked off in Athens, and artists are meant to have worked with both destinations. The first documenta, back in 1955, was planned to celebrate art labelled as ‘degenerate’ by the Nazi regime, such as Expressionism, Cubism, and Blauer Reiter. Over the years, however, the focus has shifted to contemporary art from all over the world. This year there will inevitably be a strong Greek bias, such as the giant ‘Parthenon of Books’ (left) in the Friedrichsplatz.
