New Cases in Marketing

The newest cases from the Ivey case collection are available for review. View New Cases for more details on cases registered in your discipline.

Netflix Inc.: Streaming Away from DVDs

This case examines two of the leading video rental services in the United States, Blockbuster and Netflix, and how each adapted to changing technology and market forces. At the end of the case, Blockbuster has declared bankruptcy and Netflix has seen its first decline in subscribers since its founding in 1997. Netflix also faces a number of new threats, including illegal file sharing, rental kiosks and new low cost video-on-demand (VOD) services. Netflix responds to these threats by announcing that it will split the company in two. Netflix will focus exclusively on streaming content, while a new subsidiary called Qwikster will be restricted to providing DVDs by mail. Customers overwhelmingly react negatively to the announcement, and Netflix's stock price plunges by more than 50 per cent. The case can be used to conduct a simple SWOT analysis of Netflix. More advanced students may engage in independent research to conduct a detailed analysis that might include factors not mentioned in the case.

Groupon

The collective buying industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the past several years, and Groupon stands out as a major player that has revolutionized this market. This case study describes the beginnings of Groupon, as well as the firm’s rise to power, the rise of its numerous competitors, its decisions and expansion strategies, and the collective buying industry as a whole. Key demographic data about Groupon’s customers (consumers and small businesses) are also described, along with recent developments at Groupon and within the industry in general. While Groupon has undoubtedly discovered a unique model that takes advantage of a ‘white space’ in sales and marketing to local businesses, it is unclear what the future holds for Groupon. Students will learn and understand how the different components of a strategy combine together to create competitive advantage. The case demonstrates that although competitors may be able to copy one or more parts of a strategy, it is the holistic manner in which those parts combine that makes a strategy inimitable and therefore difficult for competitors to copy. Students will also learn how to sift through different options, going forward.
