CHS: Inspiring girls to discover and pursue their personal exellence.

Welcome to the second edition of 1898 for the 2019/20 school year. This has been a busy time for alumnae coming together to celebrate the holiday season at the Young Alumnae Winter Reception, Seasonal Social and, of course, the Carol Service. We hope you enjoy reading about your fellow alumnae and marking your calendar for some important events later in the year.

It has been a busy year for the CHS Alumnae Association and as we look forward, we continue to think of ways to broaden our connection with alumnae.

It has been wonderful to see so many alumnae attend some of our annual events and with March nearly upon us we will also have the opportunity to come together on March 6 to celebrate 122 years of Crofton House School!

Along with the celebration assembly, Association AGM and lunch, the school birthday brings with it a time when we celebrate our Alumnae Achievement Award recipients:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award – Jane (Graham) McLennan ‘47
  • Distinguished Alumnae Award – Yuka Nagashima ‘88
  • Young Alumnae Achievement Award – Sabrina Leslie ‘98

Each of these women has had a meaningful and lasting impact on their respective communities.

While we enjoy and celebrate our connection with each other as an alumnae community, it is important for us to stay connected to our extended community of women and look for ways to lift each other up.  To that end, we have launched a new outreach initiative for 2020. We have partnered with the Ray-Cam Co-Operative Centre to provide vital “start-up” packages to single mothers. We will be collecting items and putting them in care packages to be delivered to the Centre and then to those most in need. Please note, we will still be collecting the list items at the School Birthday on March 6 and we would really appreciate your help in filling the boxes. For more information on how you can help and a list of items in need, visit our events page

Finally, as we focus on connection, I would encourage you to all reach out to a classmate, another alumna, a student or the school itself – create a new connection or strengthen an existing one.  If you want help getting reconnected we would love to hear from you. Feel free to connect with Lydia (McNeill) Vandenberg ‘85, Associate Director Advancement & Alumna Relations at lvandenberg@croftonhouse.ca or join our alumnae network at croftonconnect.ca.

Work Experience in Action – Celine Hu ‘20

Students in Grades 10-12 have the opportunity to participate in the Crofton House School Work Experience Program gaining real world experience and connections in fields they are interested in.

Offered through Career Education, students apply to be placed in an optional work experience during a school vacation period. The CHS community, including alumnae and parents, have been very generous in providing these opportunities for students.

Grade 12 student, Celine, joined Sonya Zeitler Fletcher ’87, Vice President, Market Development at Forestry Innovation Invention (FII), an agency of the BC government that helps to maintain, create and diversify markets for BC forest products, for a week-long work placement. We sat down with Celine and Sonya to discuss the experience. Read more.

Yearbook Survey from student Olivia Li ‘20
A Grade 12 student is working on developing and presenting an e-Yearbook for Crofton as part of her Career Capstone Project. She is seeking the help of alumnae by asking them to participate in a quick survey about yearbooks. Complete the survey.

Annual Fund Appeal
The Annual fund was reestablished in 2017 to meet a clear need in the school community – to provide necessary funding for the school’s new bursary program. Since then it has evolved to include the General Fund which provides resources to the academic, athletic and arts programs.

The school community, of which the alumnae are a part, have been asked to support this initiative. So far we have seen strong interest which we hope will continue to grow as we have not yet reached out goal. Please make your gift today.

Changing Direction – Michelle Kwok ‘16

When Michelle Kwok '16 graduated from Crofton House in 2016 her path was clear: pursue a degree in medical science at Western University with the end goal of becoming a doctor.

Soon after starting at Western, Michelle began to experience a shift in thinking that led her to explore new opportunities. In her words, “it was the first time I saw different avenues that I could go down, avenues I hadn’t even realized existed.” Read more.

Alumnae Seasonal Social and Carol Service

Once again we had a tremendous group of alumnae out to start the holiday season at our annual Seasonal Social. View photos from the Carol Service and Seasonal Social event.

A special thank you to all the alumnae who brought a book in support of the Reading Bear Society. This will be an ongoing initiative for the CHS alumnae so there will be many opportunities to support this very deserving cause. Young Alumnae Winter Reception

Alumnae from 2019 to 2009 joined us at Point Grey Golf club for our 2nd annual Young Alumnae Winter Reception. It was wonderful to have this dynamic group of young women out, connecting with each other and in many cases meeting our new Head of School, Ena Harrop for the first time. We’ve heard your request for a Spring reception so stay tuned for a Spring Young Alumnae Social!

Winter Bazaar 2019

Thank you to all the alumnae who come out to make jam (400+ plus jars this year), sell jam and generally support the CHS Winter Bazaar! CHS and the CHS Parents' Auxiliary are very pleased to announce that the Winter Bazaar raised $81,062 for KidSafe, a local organization that provides essential services and programs to vulnerable children during school breaks.

We want to give a special shout out to alumna Cathy (Graham) Borritt ’89 (far left) who has now served as co-chair of the Winter Bazaar for the past 2 years – thank you Cathy!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Dr. Deborah Money ’77 for her recently awarded Red Ribbon Award. This award is given by AIDS Vancouver for her years of work and dedication to supporting women in HIV care.  Deborah was also recently awarded the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Infectious Disease Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Congratulations to Chloe Wong ’19 on the impressive achievement of being awarded both the Governor General Award and Alumnae Award for Scholastic Achievement.  Chloe is busy with her continuing studies at the University of Hong Kong.

Condolences

Clayton Lehman – It is with sadness that we inform our CHS community of the passing of Clayton Lehman on January 10, 2020.  Clayton, father of Sarah Lehman ’82, served on the Board of Governors and subsequently on the Crofton House School Foundation Board.

Nellie ‘Babs’ (Smith) Moore ‘39

It is with great sadness that we inform the alumnae community of the passing of Nellie ‘Babs’ (Smith) Moore ’39, mother of Gillian Moore ’67, Lesley Moore ’70, Nancy Moore ‘74, and grandmother of OG Sophie Jaworski ’09. Babs was ever present at so many of our alumnae events, never missing a birthday celebration or Seasonal Social and taking the opportunity to connect with her classmates and alumnae of all ages.  She will be missed at our birthday celebrations this year. A memorial service at St. Helen’s Anglican Church (4405 W 8th Avenue) will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 1:30 pm. Alumnae are welcome to attend.
