Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s February 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below are some of the report's highlights:

Imports

  • The volume of regular beer imported into the U.S. declined by 1.4% in February 2017 compared to February 2016.
  • This decline was driven primarily by imports from Mexico, Netherlands, Canada, and the U.K.
  • Despite the aggregate trend, imports from Belgium, Ireland, and Germany each grew in February 2017 compared to February 2016.
  • Imports of NA beer increased by 17% in February 2017 compared to February 2016.
  • Cider imports increased by 43% during the same time period.

Exports

  • Exported beer volume increased by 28.2% in February 2017 compared to February 2016 and is now up 42% year-to-date.
  • The biggest drivers were exports to Chile and to Canada, which were up 177% and 88% respectively.
  • NA exports grew by more than 200% in February 2017 compared to February 2016 while cider exports declined by 30% during this same time period.
