So What Are The Benefits of Compression Socks?
John Hilt, SPT / Regis University
Have you ever gone for a long run, spent all day on the slopes, or pedaled your favorite trail only to get home and relax for the night, but you can’t because you have calf soreness? Well, you are not the only one. I’m going to guess this scenario has happened to a lot of active people out there. There is a good chance that if you have experience the discomfort of calf soreness after activity, you may have also heard about compression socks as a means to relief. Compression socks facilitate improved blood flow throughout the leg, resulting in more oxygen-rich blood flowing to the hard working muscles.
However, not all compression socks are the same. You have to be diligent in selecting the correct sock, so it will work how it is designed. CEP compression socks are a great example of the type of compression sock to use. Your sock is fitted by measuring the circumference around your calf to ensure proper compression. This is important because a properly fitted compression sock will be tighter around the ankle and looser around the calf to help facilitate blood flow back to the heart. With the plethora of sportswear choices out there right now, it is important to have your socks properly fitted. There are some companies selling compression socks that are fitted using shoe size or are not even made with anatomical measurements in mind. This is a huge mistake because those socks will most likely squeeze tighter at the calf compared to the ankle, therefore pushing blood toward the ankle.
This will not only hinder performance and recovery, but it could also do more harm than good. Another common mistake that can occur from improperly fitted socks is too little compression.
CEP compression socks provide medical grade compression from an off the shelf product. They are proven to improve performance by up to 5%, resulting in a faster, easier run and a quicker recovery. They also may help to reduce injuries such as: shin splints, calf cramps, Achilles issues, and pulled muscles. CEP compression sportswear has been developed from six decades of research and development on the effects of compression, resulting in a unique level of expertise integrated into each product.
