Highlight: Coming Soon: Art of Science 2016

Golden Chutes
"Golden Chutes," the 2014 Art of Science winner!

2016 will feature the third 'Art of Science' event, which aims to collect and display science-inspired artwork produced by members of the Brown BioMed community. This is an opportunity to share the sense of wonder and creativity which drives your science, but often goes unacknowledged. Submissions in-line with the above goals might:

  • Reveal the aesthetic sides of your research of which people are often unaware;
  • Visually communicate a concept, idea, or discovery from your field of research;
  • Show the common and every day in a new light;
  • Share what made you want to pursue your field of study.

Please see above Lachlan Franquemont, PhD's 2014 winning entry, "Golden Chutes," for an idea of what is possible. Entries should include information on the importance or “story” behind the images and can be created in a variety of media, including photographic images, videos/time-lapse imaging, conceptual artwork, and installation art pieces.

A call for submissions will go out early this fall and will culminate in an exhibition featuring selected artwork towards the end of the year. Start thinking about how you might like to showcase your research, and stay tuned for more information!

Why It's Worth Checking Out: The All About Grants Podcasts are perfect for your morning commute, and some of the videos add some more pizzazz to otherwise bland topics. The Nexus also features a blog with categorized entries that include extensive archives.

Postdoc Opportunity

Postdoctoral Researcher in Cancer Biology and Cancer Immunology - Program in Blood Cell Development and Function - Fox Chase Cancer Center - Philadelphia, PA

The overarching goal of this laboratory is to pursue a new understanding of immune regulatory pathways in human hematological malignancies (including lymphoma and leukemia), with a particular interest in ubiquitin-mediated signaling in tumor pathogenesis using functional and structural cancer genomics. The individual will engage in experiments involving CRISPR/Cas9 library screening, next-generation sequencing, gene expression (RNA-seq), biochemical analysis, and eventually exploiting targeted therapy for human hematological malignancies. This is a unique opportunity for someone with expertise in biochemistry/molecular biology and next generation sequencing techniques to learn complementary skills and become proficient in translational study.

The candidate must have excellent skills in biochemistry and molecular biology, and ideally with experiences in post-translational protein modifications.

For more information and to apply, please view the job posting.

Career Position

Staff Scientist - Laboratory of Systems Biology- National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) - NIH - Bethesda, MD

The Laboratory of Systems Biology is recruiting individuals in the broad area of computational analysis of diverse data sets from high-throughput assays such as micorarrays, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, RNAi screens, mass spectrometry/proteomics, high-content imaging, and SNP genotyping for positions as staff scientists. The incumbents will work closely with experimentalists for analysis and biological interpretation of these data, and will help train investigators with limited data analysis skills in the use of commonly available data analysis tools and suggest methods for more advanced analysis.

Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D. or M.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, or relevant discipline and three or more years of hands-on research experience with the analysis of high-throughput data sets. For more information on this and other employment listings at NIAID, please visit the NIAID jobs page.
