Everything we are involved in may begin to pile up and it can seem that the only thing our life is made up of is homework, practice, studying, work, and not getting enough sleep. We can promote a grateful lifestyle by keeping a hopeful attitude that sees our challenges as opportunities rather than burdens to ignore.Practicing Gratitude From the Archives – Tom Heethuis, Adviser Liaison My first year as a Student Council Advisor was 1974. In the 45 that have followed, I have been fortunate to been involved with national, state and local organizations that promote involvement by students and the training of advisors. The sharing of the “good stuff” between fellow advisors was a key to my professional growth. Breaking Down GASB 84 and Fundraising Historically, school districts categorized many student activity group funds (SAFs), including funds generated via fundraisers, as “Agency Funds.” Usually, SAFs were kept in a bank under the school district’s name. School districts implemented policies and procedures to exercise direct control over SAFs in order to ensure that collection, deposits, and recording of funds were done properly. With the advent of GASB 84, “Agency Funds” have been replaced by “Fiduciary Funds,” and school districts are now required to determine whether a specific activity – like a student fundraising activity – is a “fiduciary activity” or not.Leadership Day with the Detroit Pistons is Back! Women in Leadership Conference: This conference will provide the opportunity for female building and central office leaders to network, build skill sets, and lead forward. Although the number of female leaders in education has seen a slight increase at the building-level, the percentage remains disproportionate in secondary schools and the central office. As the statewide associations for principals and superintendents, we recognize the importance of building leadership capacity to increase the number of women in leadership positions. This Week in Politics in 5 Sentences (or Fewer) On Tuesday, the House Education Committee debated but did not vote on HB 4974 – a bill that would classify computer coding as a language other than English, effectively allowing students to substitute computer coding for the two MMC required world language credits. This is the second time this session the committee has debated legislation to modify the world language requirement and the latest in a series of curriculum bills that have gotten hearings in the House, though none has yet made it over to the Senate. In this same vein, Senator Jon Bumstead (R-Newaygo) introduced SB 600 on Thursday, legislation that proposes sweeping changes to the MMC and a bill that – at least based on the common wisdom of the Lansing rumor mill – seems destined for debate during a rare Senate Education Committee hearing (that panel has only met twice so far this session). Also this week, HB 4546 and HB 4547 – a pair of bills that would allow students to dual enroll during the summer (subject to local district approval) – moved over to the Senate and HB 4208 – a bill to prohibit family members from evaluating one another under Michigan's teacher evaluation law – made it out of the Ways and Means Committee and onto the House floor. Finally, while discussions continue about the possibility for a K-12 budget supplemental to restore some of the vetoed line items, no agreement seems likely anytime in the near future. Education Excellence Awards If you know of a #MI public school teacher or administrator leading a program that serves as a positive influence on students and the community, make sure that teacher applies for an #EducationExcellence Award to receive $2,500 toward that program.
