Message from the Principal

I love holidays!
I imagine many of you do too.
Whether you go on a day trip, stay somewhere close, or travel to the other side of the world there are different sights to see, people to engage with, and things to learn.
When I have travelled overseas I expected to be surprised by a different culture, to learn about that culture, and through this, to understand more about my own life and country.
When I travel within Australia, I don’t expect that kind of challenge – we are all Australians; we all speak the same language, hold mostly similar values, and share so much in common.
However, these last holidays when I went to Central Australia – the spiritual heart of our country, so ancient and with its huge horizons, blue skies and red, red desert, I expected to feel very much at home all the time.
But it was not the case – or not all of the time, anyway.

Jack Furey - Year 10

Hi all,
I'm taking part in the 2015 PRG 24 Hour Bayside Charity Ride to help raise funds to build a Day Procedure Centre at Sandringham Hospital. I am honoured to be a part of this amazing event and helping a great cause, and I’d really appreciate your support in this endeavour.
The bike ride takes place on 29 and 30 August, circulating up and down Beach Road, rain, hail or shine and right through the night!
My goal is to ride 400 km and to raise at least $1000 towards this worthy cause. I am passionate about this because community hospitals need our support.
All donations you give go directly to Sandringham Hospital, so click on DONATE!  Any donation, big or small, is gratefully accepted.  Please note, online donations are preferred, but if you wish to pay by cash or cheque, please contact Sandringham Hospital on 9076 1655.
Thank you for your support and helping to make a difference to our community!

Bridge Building Workshop

On 15 June, four SEEK students attended a Bridge Building workshop at Siena College with thirty students from six schools.

I'm sure that all who experienced it would agree when I say that the Bridge Building workshop at Siena was a great experience. We learned about many different types of bridge, including the social bridges that are always forged at this type of excursion. The maths section, at the start of the day, helped build social bridges by awarding extra points to people who work together. The drama segment was based on quickly scripting, or improvising, a small play. Finally the science part was about physical bridges, and finished with us building our own miniature bridges out of things like sticks, paper clips and twine.
Charles Bennett

I really enjoyed this as it incorporated creativity and thinking logically. Overall the day was a success and I've taken away some great skills.

The students worked well with the students from the other schools and found the experience both beneficial and interesting.
Well done!

A visit to Parliament House

On Tuesday 23 June, we were honored to spend an evening at Parliament House with other school captains of the Eastern Metropolitan region. We were given the opportunity to do this with the Government’s aim of supporting, encouraging and congratulating us on the leadership roles that we have undertaken as part of our school community.

The evening involved an introduction from Members of Parliament followed by an extensive tour of Parliament, guided by the President of the Legislative Council Mr Bruce Atkinson. It was not only rewarding to meet many officials of our Government, but to be shown the offices, meeting rooms and chambers in which they work.

It was very exciting to enter Parliament while it was in session, and for people who had never set foot in the Senate, it was quite an odd experience. Both of us were amazed at not only the architecture but also the people taking part in the discussion - some seemed to be intensely taking notes while others appeared to be chatting amongst themselves. Bruce assured us that it was completely normal for this to happen, and no disrespect was actually shown. To see how parliament operated in the flesh was fascinating to say the least.

Girls AFL Footy Carnival

On Friday 24 July Kingswood College Junior School Girls’ Football Team played in the Blackburn Districts Primary Schools Sports Association (BDPSSA) Girls AFL Footy Carnival against eight other schools. The day was well organised by Anthony Panou, BDPSSA Sports Secretary and Craig Smith, Secretary of the Blackburn Junior Football Club. The club hosted the teams at their Morton Park Clubhouse and two football grounds. The Blackburn Junior Football Club put on a lunchtime sausage sizzle with a drink and a piece of fruit which was gratefully enjoyed by all the players.
Our girls enjoyed the day playing in seven games of football which were two 10 minute halves. We had 11 players from Kingswood College and for each game Roberts McCubbin Primary School lent us five players. In each game we played against teams of 16 with no wings. All the schools played in a competitive sportsmanlike manner and it was an enjoyable day. Ryan Berg’s Year 10 Physical Education/Recreation Class assisted with the day’s structure as officials for each of the four games going concurrently.

Costume requirements for JS Production ‘We are Monsters’

All children (other than the four Year 6 students playing ‘humans’) will need to provide their own ‘black stage outfit’ comprising of black tracksuit pants or leggings, a black skivvy, and black school shoes. It is very important that these black clothes have no logos, markings or other colours. Many students may still fit their black clothes they may have kept from our productions in previous years. Once again, our students will be transformed by the amazing Dee of costume business Amazing Transformations using creative ad-ons such as cuffs, capes, headbands, hats, jackets, sashes etc.
If you have any problem sourcing black clothes as described please notify your classroom teacher as soon as possible. If you have black clothes to donate to other families please bring them to Nicole at the JS office. Students will need to bring their complete black stage outfits on ‘costume check day’ which individual classroom teachers will schedule for a specific day suiting their class during Week 4 this term.

Introducing Golf at Kingswood College in the Junior School

As part of our ongoing commitment to student health, wellbeing and providing sporting opportunities for Junior School students we have established a working relationship with Jayden Zeinstra and My Golf Victoria. Thanks to this association we have received a My Golf Victoria Kit for use in our Physical Education program. Over the past two weeks, students in Years 3 - 6 have participated in three introductory golf lessons as part of their PE classes. We have concentrated on the basics of grip, stance, the swing, hand-eye coordination, safety and safely working in small groups.

This week, Years 3 - 6 students have received a golf lesson from James Hull, Golf Professional at Box Hill Golf Club. The students enjoyed instruction about driving, chipping and putting. Students enjoyed themselves immensely, learned new skills and represented the school very well. Many thanks to Jayden Zeinstra, My Golf Victoria, James Hull and Box Hill Golf Club for making this possible. Also thank you to the classroom teachers of Years 3 - 6 (Jay Callaghan, Rob Olifiers, Leeanne Pike and Roger Dillon) along with our parents who all volunteered their time for these clinics and the movement of all students to and from.

2015 Collection Notice

In 2015, the Federal Government will require all Government, Independent and Catholic schools to complete an annual census to gather accurate information about the number and distribution of Australian school students with specific learning needs and disabilities. The name for this census is Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCDSSD).
Kingswood College will willingly participate in this information gathering process to ensure that our processes are in line with the requirements of the Commonwealth Government.
As this Census only uses the term Disability, it is important to explain the broad meaning of the term. For this Census, Disability does not require a formal diagnosis and covers a broad range of students who may have learning difficulties right through to a student who has a physical disability such as cerebral palsy.
If you have any questions about the 2015 Data Collection, please do not hesitate to contact me. Further information about the Data Collection can be found on Kingsnet or click here.
