COTA Victoria extends its congratulations to its new board member Ian Dunn on his well-deserved honour of becoming a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day honour’s list announced last month.

Ken honoured in 2018 Jagajaga Australia Day Awards
|
|
COTA Victoria’s fantastic volunteer Ken Ramplin was a recent recipient of the Jagajaga Community’s Australia Day Awards.
Ken was recognised for his involvement and hard work in establishing three Older Men: New Ideas (OM:NI) groups, one in Diamond Creek, the others in Eltham and Hurstbridge.

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) is leading the formation of an Action Plan for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as part of the Commonwealth Government’s development of an Aged Care Diversity Strategy Framework.

Apart from Victoria experiencing above average daytime temperatures throughout the summer, people aged over 65 years have an increased vulnerability to heat. Health Victoria’s publication Heat Stress and Older People provides essential information about staying safe in the heat.

When old news is good news

New York Times Metro reporter John Leland has been surprised at the joy, hope and life-lessons he has gained in the past three years by repeatedly interviewing six New York residents aged 85 and older – part of the fastest-growing age group in the USA.
His series explored what old age looks like to the people who are living it. What it did not explore is what effect these people were having on the reporter. Read John’s full article here.

Frail older people more likely to develop dementia
|
|
The risk of developing dementia is around 3.5 times higher in frail older adults than in their non-frail peers, according to recent research from the University College in London.
The study, published in Scientific Reports, found that frailty affects around 17 per cent of older adults in England. Those who were frail at the start of the study had a greatly increased risk of developing dementia over the next 10 years.

Ageing link to Heart of Inequality
